Shiner USO Drive Aims to Raise 350 Quota

In Shiner about 100 local boys serve in the Armed Forces. The town is urged to donate to the USO, which costs 3.50 per Shiner boy per year. USO solicitors will contact downtown business men the week of January 5, 1953. contributions may be mailed to Don Kasper, USO Chairman.

Mrs. John A. Kutac Resting After Illness in Shiner

Mrs. John Alice Kutac 45 died Sunday December 21 after seven months of illness. Born May 31 1907 in Shiner she and husband John A. Kutac farmed near Shiner before moving to town in 1951. Survived by husband daughter Patricia four sisters and four brothers. Requiem High Mass December 23 at 9 00 a.m. at Shiner Catholic Church with Rosary the prior evening. Burial in Shiner Catholic Cemetery.

Rainfall continues with heavy week totals in Shiner

Rainfall persisted through the past week with 1.20 inches Thursday night and 1.15 inches Sunday night, accompanied by thunderstorms and high winds. The weekly total approaches three inches, signaling continued wet weather for the area.

Emler Graveside Rites Held for William Carl Emler

William Carl Emler, 76, died Monday in Ingleside. Funeral services were held December 23 at Cage Funeral Home Chapel in Aransas Pass, with burial at Shiner City Cemetery. A Shiner resident in earlier years, he was remembered by old timers.

Christmas Decoration Contest Entry Deadline Notice

The deadline is six p.m. on December 24 for entering the Knights of Columbus Christmas Decoration contest. Entries will be accepted by phone until 6:00 p.m. for those who missed mailing an entry blank, inviting participation and adding names and addresses to the homes to be judged.

Shiner Post Office to Close for Christmas and New Year

Acting Postmaster Arthur T. Ward announces the Shiner Post Office will close all day Thursday December 25 for Christmas and Thursday January 1 1953 for New Year. Also December 26 will have limited hours from 1 to 2 pm and no rural deliveries on those three days.

Yoakum Terrell Class AA Championship Friday at Kyle Field

Yoakum Bulldogs meet Terrell Tigers in the Class AA State Football Championship at Texas A M Kyle Field Friday at 2:00 P M. Methodist Church Christmas Service and Baptisms

The Methodist Church holds Sunday services at 11:00 AM on December 28 with infant baptisms and new member admissions. The sermon is When The Angels Were Gone. Pontiff’s 14th Christmas Message On Air From Vatican

Vatican City reports Pope Pius XII will broadcast his 14th annual Christmas message in 24 languages on shortwave from Vatican Radio with translations starting every 45 minutes. The pope, 76, calls himself an unwearied advocate of peace and may directly address Yugoslavia’s Communist rulers. Also listed are church services and Christmastide events at several local congregations and churches.

Last Tribute to Edmund Herder Fire Department Leader

Ed Herder longtime president of the Shiner Volunteer Fire Department collapsed during his 1952 Fire Prevention address at Trades Days. He had served 32 years as president and half a century as a member, valued for unselfish community service. The crowd gathered to honor his memory after a life of dedication.

Husbands Loyal Service Endures in Shiner Pioneer

Funeral rites honored Mr. Herder a longtime Shiner Postmaster and Ford agency partner who served 53 years in government and business roles. Pallbearers included J F Kasper John E Kasper Gilbert Kasper Henry Lee Bennie Simper Wilbur Minear. honorary pallbearers and Firemen's Wives Auxiliary attended. Born 1882 in Engle Fayette County, he lived in Halfmoon, married Martha Finkenstein in 1902, and died December 18, 1952, after a 50th wedding anniversary. Interment at Shiner City Cemetery after services at the family home.

Gazette Will Publish Jan 1 1953 Issue

The Gazette announces publication of the January 1 1953 issue, mailed December 30 to allow New Year’s Eve holiday work. Deadline for copy and meeting notices is Monday December 29. Publishers planned no omission despite the holiday, due to scheduled advertising.

Shiner Farm Bureau to Meet and Discuss March of Dimes Drive

The Shiner Community Farm Bureau will hold a regular meeting Wednesday January 7 at 7 30 p.m. at Legion Park with Judge Fertsch present to discuss the March of Dimes Drive and two door prizes to be awarded. The Shiner Cemetery Association will meet January 2 at 3 00 p.m. at City Hall and asks members to attend and share suggestions and help.
