Relatives informed of the birth of a 9 lb baby son to Mr and Mrs Bernard Stratman at Longview. The arrival brings the household to three boys in the family.
Mr and Mrs Henry Strauss of Hallettsville welcome their newborn daughter born Monday at Renger Hospital. The baby’s three sisters greet her with a hearty welcome.
The Shiner Public School P T A met December 14 1939 at the high school auditorium. Officers answered roll call and minutes were approved. The group approved reimbursements for debate materials and repairs to damaged library books. A February 23 1940 entertainment feature was set under Mrs Ella Lane.
The Lavaca County Home Demonstration Council met at the Masonic Hall in Hallettsville on Saturday afternoon December 16 1939 with the president presiding Minutes were read and approved. Treasurers report accepted. Clubs reported 45 mats were made and several thousand containers of fruits meats and vegetables were canned. Six pressure cookers and other canning equipment were bought. Gardens and improved kitchens and ventilated pantries were noted. 4-H girls performed a Christmas folk dance with music. After adjournment a Christmas party and program followed with gifts lunch and a decorated tree. The group planned to meet again in January.
Jimmy Hull presents a new stage show under a big tent in Shiner for three days starting Monday December 25. The opening night features the four act mystery The Spider and the Fly. One lady admitted free with each paid adult ticket. Prices are 10 and 25 cents.
Mrs. Ella E Lane directed her Expression class in The Doctor of Lonesome Folk at the Shiner gymnasium, with Dickens era setting and elaborate costumes. The event featured music by local performers and a large cast, including The Court of King Christmas. Net proceeds benefit the City Cemetery Association.
The Gazette announces it will not publish next week except for Christmas Day. The printing department will accept orders for New Year needs and deliver promptly. City Hall was filled Sunday evening December 17 as United Dr. Martin Luther Church Sunday School presented its annual Christmas program. Shiner High School Orchestra opened, Jr. Choral Club sang Silent Night, and the Sr. choir performed. Santa Claus arrived with gifts for Sunday School pupils and teachers, under Mrs. Hugh Koether's direction.
The Shiner Garden Club gathered for a December 15 meeting at Mrs. Wm. Zappe Sr. home. Members shared festive Xmas center pieces wreaths and other decorations while punch and cookies were served. Yoakum Garden Club guests attended the social evening.

Rt Rev Mons L P Netardus and Jos Muras attended the funeral of Mrs Anna Nickel at Flatonia Saturday. Monsignor delivered the sermon for the occasion. Joe Fojtik and family of Skidmore visited here several days and were mentioned in the same item. Heritage of the Desert was advertised at the Palace Theatre for Friday and Saturday.
Notice is hereby given that at 10 oclock a m Tuesday January 2 1940 an election will be held under the State Soil Conservation Law at the City Hall in Shiner Texas to elect a Committee Member of Commissioners Precinct Three Lavaca County to serve on the Lavaca County Soil Conservation Advisory Committee until January 1 1942 or until his successor is elected and has qualified The law requires precincts one and three to elect a new member on the first Tuesday in January 1940 and every two years thereafter The elected member must be a landowner in Precinct Three and actively engaged in farming or animal husbandry A majority of landowners present shall be necessary to elect The present member is Mr Joe H Kouba whose term expires January 2 1940

Victor Meyer, son of Mr and Mrs O S Meyer, leaves Randolph Field San Antonio with 191 others for Langley Field Virginia to enter an aviation school. He is one of three promoted after a short stay at Randolph Field. We congratulate him on his success.

Fred Berckenhoff, operated on for ruptured ulcer of the stomach, is reported doing nicely at St. Joseph's Infirmary in Houston. His brother Paul and Emmett Dreyer, en route, were in a wreck when their car struck a repair guard fence. Paul sustained six stitches for a bruised hand, Dreyer escaped injury, another car hit their rear as they hit the fence. The incident was unfortunate but not grave for the men.
A brief update notes Ed Havel will be at Sunken Garden to discuss this week's fish selection and related tips. The item highlights local gardening expert presence and a venue for viewing fish varieties.

City Marshal Canon announces no fireworks in Shiner's business district this Christmas. He urges vendors to instruct buyers to depart the commercial area before any ignition to safeguard property.
The community mourns the death of Jo Anne Hinch two years three months old of Wied. She died Saturday at 1 20 a m after several months of illness and is laid to rest in Shiner Catholic Cemetery with services in Shiner Church. Rt Rev Mon L P Netardus officiated and delivered a Czech sermon. Rev E Bily presided at the cemetery. Survivors include her parents a sister Janice Barbara two brothers Gustin and Marcus and grandparents Mr and Mrs J Tomek and Mr and Mrs John Hinch. The family faces a sad Christmas with heartfelt sympathy from friends.
Mrs. Mary Fojtik age 86 died Sunday at 2 30 a m after a long life in the Shiner area arriving from Czechoslovakia at age two. funeral Tuesday from daughter’s home near Sunset with Requiem Mass in Catholic church officiated by Rt Rev Mons Netardus. Interment in Shiner Catholic cemetery. Survived by 10 children, 59 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren. sister Mrs Chas Sugarek of Beeville. Condolences extended to relatives.

The Shiner Volunteer Fire Department hosts its annual New Year’s Eve Ball at Blucher Park on December 31. Patek's Orchestra provides music as citizens pack the event to boost the fire department fund. Fireworks are strictly forbidden on the grounds.
The last meeting of the year at Pohler's Cafe served a two course shrimp cocktail and oyster plate to eighteen members. Pres. Benno Holchak led routine business as secretary treasurer's reports were approved. The Christmas tree and Santa Claus committee praised, 1250 packages were distributed to children under twelve, and the Boy Scouts were thanked for assistance. L. E. Denmark shared highway information. Mrs. Lane announced a cemetery benefit event on Dec 18. Bills for the Christmas tree will be paid at the January meeting.
Mrs. Annie Berckenhoff nee Brosch died at Yorktown aged 72 after living in Wied six years earlier. Requiem Mass held in Shiner Catholic church with interment in Shiner Catholic cemetery. Survived by husband, five children, siblings, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Relatives here were notified of the death of Fred Marburger age 44 whose death occurred at Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston last Thursday. He collapsed on the street and lingered six days but never regained consciousness. Funeral services were held Friday at 2 30 with burial in Hollywood cemetery. Survivors are three daughters Mrs Clem Oncken Mildred and Lola Mae Marburger an only sister Mrs Hilda Porter of Omaha Ned.
