Joseph Slovacek 83 Dies at Sweet Home

Joseph Slovacek age 83 of Yoakum died December 2 at Huth Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held at Kabena Funeral Home Hallett s ville and Sweet Home Catholic Church with burial in Sweet Home Cemetery. He was born July 17 1872 in Floresville and survived by his wife three sons four daughters one brother five sisters and 29 grandchildren.

Firemen's New Year Dance Planned by Shiner VFD

The Shiner Volunteer Fire Department announces its New Year’s Eve dance for Saturday December 31 at Legion Park. Joe Patek’s Orchestra will provide music with admission 75 cents for gents and 25 cents for ladies tax included. The event will be held regardless of weather and all are invited. No fireworks allowed on park premises.

Santa Claus Arrives For Yule Spirit in Shiner

The Chamber of Commerce and Shiner Business Men's Club welcomed Santa Claus on December 9 in Welhausen Park. The event drew about 1800 packages distributed to children, with the Shiner High School Band performing as Girl Scouts and Brownies sang carols and Mrs. E A Ross led community singing. Church officials gave invocations and greetings from local groups highlighted the Christmas celebration.

Funeral Rites Held For Samuel E. McKay

Samuel Edgar McKay 45 of Texarkana died suddenly of a heart attack Saturday. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Avon Dale Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Bates officiating. Burial followed at Hillcrest Cemetery. Survivors include his wife a son S E McKay Jr and a stepson Benny Porter.

First Patronage Refunds for Guadalupe Valley Electric Coop

The Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative mailed 3,000 patronage refunds totaling 82784.67 to members who served from 1942 to 1947. Since 1940 the system expanded from 11 KWH per member monthly to 250 KWH, with 8,500 members across 90 by 50 miles in Gonzales Lavaca Guadalupe Wilson counties.

Kenedy Banker Dies on Ranch

Edwin Paul Ruhmann Sr. 77 president of Nichols National Bank of Kenedy died of a heart attack while hunting with his grandson on a ranch 20 miles south of Cotulla. A retired wholesale grocer and former mayor, he led the local school board and was past master of the Masonic lodge. Funeral plans pending.
