Roy H. Mewes had major surgery last week and is making satisfactory progress per a letter to Miss Mabel Merrem. He resides at Forest Park Trailer Court Route 1 Lot 42 North Little Rock Ark.
W. J. Roeder of Rockport recalls hiring Lyndon B. Johnson at the Roether Roeder Gin in Robstown when Johnson was 16. Roeder says Johnson worked about two weeks unloading cotton, showing brightness but little farm experience. The remark ties to Johnson's 1963 Senate campaign recollection mentioned at a Corpus Christi rally.
Twenty four Texas A M University students will represent the university at the Student Conference on National Affairs in College Station December 11 14. The A M delegates include eight foreign students and will take part in roundtables and hear five speakers on government spending and taxes chaired by R Russell Huddleston. Over 130 student leaders from colleges across the United States Mexico and Canada will attend as delegates with 16 roundtable chairmen drawn from industry government and education. Speakers include Max Freedman.
Compton, farm director for KTRH Houston, will drive a Ford tractor in a plowing demonstration at the Pargmann farm near Yoakum on Thursday December 5 weather permitting. The event follows a temperature guessing contest won by Wilburn Pargmann who predicted 97 degrees for Houston last summer.
Arnold Stanek brought in a 9 pointer killed at Campbellton on Saturday November 23.
The Rev. F. E. Eilers longtime pastor at Swiss Alp and Black Jack Lutheran churches has accepted a call to United Dr. Martin Luther Church in Shiner. He will preach his final sermon at Swiss Alp and Black Jack on the last Sunday in December and start at Shiner on January 5. He helped acquire Lutherhill in 1954 and chaired the first camp committee. He is married to Erna Roitsch with two daughters Rebekah and Carol.
Miss Frances Greive 67 10 2 died December 2 1963 in Shiner. Funeral at Buffington Chapel and Requiem Mass at Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, burial in Flatonia Catholic Cemetery. Survived by nieces and nephews. last of her immediate family.
Funeral services for Mrs. Joe Janie Fojtik of Granger who died November 28 1963 were held at Con dra Funeral Home Granger and Saints Cyril and Methodius Church. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery. She was born June 16 1880 in Praha and lived in Granger 55 years dying at 83 years five months and 12 days. Surviving are her husband a daughter Marie Johnson two sons Frank J Fojtik and Laddie Fojtik three grandchildren and two great grandchildren two sisters and two brothers.
The 1964-65 Texas Almanac from The Dallas Morning News is issued in paperbound and clothbound editions with prices of 1.75 and 2.25 plus tax. It features urban growth data for 21 cities, county maps, population figures from the 1960 census, elections, governance, and extensive statistical sections.
Hospital weekly roster lists patients including Stanley Ivicic and several titled Mrs. patients with babies in Flatonia and Shiner. Dismissals include Jim mie Machart and multiple titled patients with twin boys, plus a colored unit entry for Ozella Hights and Robert Dilworth.
Shiner PTA hosts talk on holiday decor by Mrs. David Hallam at 3:00 p.m. December 6 in the Public School gym. Admission 1.00 for adults and 50 cents for students. Santa arrives by red fire truck at Welhausen Park at 5:00 p.m. December 13 with bags of goodies. Shiner High School Concert Band performs at 4:30 p.m. in the park, featuring majorettes and carols.
A fire at Ave D and 8th Street destroyed a building owned by Mrs. A. J. Berckenhoff and used by W. G. Stindt Humble distributor and Edwin Schovajsa Service Station. Loss estimated at 5000 with no insurance. Fire was reported about 1 30 a.m. Friday November 29 by Constable E. A. Kasper and Nightwatch man August Stiborek. Authorities believe electrical wiring amid strong north winds sparked the blaze, which was fought under difficult conditions until 4 30 a.m. with volunteers remaining on duty until 6 a.m. This was Shiner’s first major fire since 1955. The piece urges precautions as frost season approaches to prevent such sparks.
The Shiner Cemetery Association will not host a benefit social this fall. All lot owners are asked to give a cash donation, with personal contact for contributions. Perpetual care holders won’t be contacted unless they choose to donate, and donations may be left at the First National Bank.
S./Sgt. Lloyd will be at the Shiner Post Office Monday and Tuesday, December 9-10 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. for young men seeking information on Marine Corps careers. Contact the post office to reach the recruiter.
Farmers gather Thursday December 5 at 7 30 p m for John Deere Day sponsored by Hajek Implement and Supply Co at the Catholic Parish Gym. The program features farm equipment films with Hollywood personalities including Cliff Arquette and Charlie Weaver and is free to all farm families and interested guests.
The FHA hosts a Christmas centerpiece contest at the High School Cafetorium on Sunday from 3 to 8 PM Audience entrants must bring centerpieces by noon. A free will donation supports FHA activities.
Lavaca County farmers may vote December 10 on upland cotton quotas for 1964. Polls open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at City Hall Molton and Shiner, Blahuta's Store Moravia, Newby’s Store on Highway 77 A, Hallettsville ASCS Office conference room. Two thirds approval required. if in effect, quotas with penalties and price support 65 to 90 percent parity. If not, no quotas and price support at 50 percent.
Rev Albert Maneth of Shiner with ties to St John Yoakum is elevated to Right Reverend and Domestic Prelate. Born in Cameron he served as pastor in Nixon Ganado St John and St Ann San Antonio. Also elevated were Fr Vogelle of Kosciusko and Papal Chamberlains Nowak Martin McDonald of San Antonio.
Clement G. Pustejovsky died November 24 1963 at Angleton Clinic Hospital Brazoria County after a four day confinement He was 55 and a native of Shiner He worked as custodian in Brazoria County Court House for fifteen years Services were held November 23 1963 at Angleton Funeral Home Chapel and at St Anthony s Church Danbury Interment was in Danbury Cemetery Pallbearers included his nephews E E Stluka Jr A J Filipp and Robert Stluka Survived by five sisters and two brothers with several nieces and nephews attending from Shiner and Danbury and Dallas families provided support
