H C Leach Jr takes the helm at Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner after long military service and a career in engineering and sales. He brings a record of aviation honors and business leadership to the firm as Mrs. Leach resumes life in their hometown.

Robert Sterling was notified last week that he was elected to serve as a member on the membership committee of the Texas Cottonseed Crushers Association.
There will be no holiday in Shiner on Labor Day as it is not one of the scheduled holidays adopted.

The Mutts and Jeffs played two championship softball games on a Thursday night with the Jeffs winning 10 to 8 after a prior 17 to 16 Mutts victory. Proceeds benefited the Shiner P T A, netting $59.29 from both games and stands including $38.90 from a first game offering, $15.25 from a second, and $5.14 from a drink stand.
Shiner Rotary Club joins Rotary Fellowship Day at the 1950 State Fair of Texas on Oct 20. Dallas hosts invite about 15 000 Rotarians from 255 clubs with tickets to South Pacific and Ice Cycles of 1951. Rotarians register at the Friendship House for attendance credit and box luncheon before a mid day ride to the Auditorium. The State Fair runs Oct 7 22 boasting the All American Jersey Show and a vast array of shows and exhibits.
The regular monthly Herman Sons Lodge meeting is canceled for Sunday Sept 3 due to the Shi Ner Catholic Church annual picnic.
Shiner Catholic Church plans its annual Church Picnic at Legion Park this Sunday September 3. Barbecued chicken with trimmings served family style for dinner and supper. Joe Pateks orchestra will provide music and an auction is slated for 4 p.m. Fun and food attract parishioners and new friends alike.
Lavaca and Gonzales counties sent a bus convoy of 56 youths to Army physical examinations in San Antonio on Tuesday August 22 the eighth draft call in the current emergency. Draftees from Lavaca include Edwin Kubicek Frank Dolezal Jr and 18 others while Gonzales County lists Henry Hardaway Jr Hersley O Neal Allen Manking Melvin Hicks Frank Valenta Hugh Shelton Alfred Flowers and more.
The list shows patients including Mrs. E. J. Henkhaus Mrs. Julius J. Vrana Miss Vera Hodges and others with a colored unit entry Mamie Koontz Shiner. Dismissals include Edward Barta Mrs Jim J Mikes William J Noack and multiple others including babies and spouses.

Edward Kurtz and wife welcomed Edward James born August 25 weighing 8 lb 10 oz. mother Stacy Kubecka. Victor De Harde and wife welcomed a baby girl born August 23 weighing 9 lb 10 oz. Stanley Gerlich of Houston and wife welcomed a baby girl born August 25 weighing 9 lb 12 oz.
L M Roeder public weigher reports 3897 bales of new cotton received up to Tuesday night Aug 29. Last year on the same date 3500 bales were received.
John C. White of Wichita Falls defeated 10-term incumbent J. E. McDonald for Texas commissioner of agriculture in the Democratic runoff. Final bureau tallies show White 351,149 to McDonald 340,075 with 12,000 votes uncounted. Ramsey led lieutenant governor race, and Meade Griffin topped for Supreme Court Place 3.
Total votes in Shiner were 244 with 126 from the West box and 118 from the East box. Election officials included West presiding officer Herbert Discher, judges Ed F. Busch Albert J. Seidenberger and Charles J. Krejci, and East presiding officer Frank Tasler Jr., judges Leo Hubner John S. Havel, with Tony Roeder as clerk.

Due to the Turk Pettus wedding at the Methodist Church Sunday evening there will be no gospel service at night. Rev Horwood will preach at the 11 a.m. service Sunday morning.
