Mr and Mrs Pete Kahanek welcomed a ninth pound son named Patrick James born Friday. Sponsors are Mr and Mrs Jos Muras. This is the couple’s first child. Mother was the former Miss Emma Cimrhanzer.
The annual Fall Picnic will be held Sunday September 17 with the same committees in charge as in prior years. Dinner full of traditional fare will be 35 cents for adults and 20 cents for children, with amusements planned throughout the day.
Miss Mary Christine McKinney of Beeville and Carl Schaefer of Schulenburg were married Saturday afternoon at the McKinney home in Beeville. Rev. John N. McKay officiated. The groom, an A. and M. Engineering graduate, works with a seismograph crew. They will reside in Corpus Christi.

Charlie Polasek and wife welcome a baby girl born Sunday Aug 27, mother formerly Louise Grossman. Jerry Migl and wife report Geraldine Ann weighing 7% lbs at Ingleside hospital. Anton Koncaba and wife announce Rosie Vlasta weighing 9¼ lbs born Aug 24 at the local hospital.
Relatives were notified of the arrival of a baby girl weighing 814 pounds at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Busch in Gonzales on Sunday.
A Yoakum delegation and Mr and Mrs Marvin Merrem Weldon Knape of Moulton and Lee Sedlmeyer of Shiner spent Tuesday evening at the Boy Scout Camp near Austin. They admired the scenic background new buildings a swimming pool and other unfinished projects that together make Camp Wooten a Boy Scout paradise.

The St Ludmila's Academy opens on Sept 4 at 8 o'clock with a High Mass in St Cyril and Methodius Church. Faculty expect many former students back, with new faces among them. The year offers English, Public Speaking, Geometry, Algebra, two Czech courses, Home Economics, General Science, World History, Typing, German, American History.
The Gulf boys remain undefeated as Shiner Motor Sales fights to stay alive. Sinclair needs one win to advance to the windup while three teams chase fourth place. Kasper Wire Works and Wolters Bros finally notched first wins but remain outsiders. The playoff picture centers on Gulf Charlottenburg against Shiner Motor Sales with Magnolia and Brewers as possible spoilers.
Thomas Weyman Dedear aged 18 years 11 months and 1 day died Sunday at the Huth Memorial Hospital after a week of illness. Funeral services were held at Beck Mortuary Chapel and St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. H. V. Hug officiating. Burial followed in St. Joseph Cemetery. Survived by parents Henry and wife of Hochheim two sisters Willie Mae Krumm and Maureen. brothers Otis Clyde of Hochheim and Russe of Shiner. grandparents J. W. Kelly of Yokum and Mrs. Jo Dedear of Roma Rock. Petersville Ball Club and St Anns Dramatic Club served as pallbearers.
Home Economics group of H. E. Girls met at Clara Bell Behlen’s residence on Monday August 21 with Ethel Baros presiding. Members Elsie Lieskovsky Lola Mae Marburger and Bessie Mae Mraz presented project reports and a plan for Achievement Day was discussed. No date or place set. further notice forthcoming. Afterward the group visited the swimming pool and shared lunch.
Rev Msgr. preached a touching sermon at the first profession of Sisters Stanislaus Beatrice and Nepomucene on Monday September 28. He celebrated a Solemn High Mass with Deacon Edmud Bily as Subdeacon and Master of Ceremonies Ignatius Kopczynski. Vaclav Bily is a nephew of Sister Stanislaus and Edmond a cousin. each Jubilarians wore a silver crown placed by a Sister in the Order as the choir sang Mass in E Flat.
Twenty one members attended the regular meeting with Pres Holchak guesting. The secretary returned from vacation and shared summer observations of Lubbock. Minutes and treasurer reports were approved. Members approved a $14 donation to the Baseball Club. Edna’s hospitality was praised during Shiner’s visit. Discussion covered Boy Scout unification and financing with a $5 monthly pledge approved. Attendees urged to become permanent lunch group members. Meeting adjourned after routine business.
The friends of Miss Mabel Merrem share in her joy as she receives a Master s Degree from the State University. A Shine High and Southwestern University alumna, she taught in Shine and Yoakum schools before joining Sidney Lanier High in San Antonio. Her thesis Amelia Barr Educator impressed reviewers and will join State University archives.
Al bert Barta and Miss Mary Hanzlik were united in marriage at St James Catholic Church Gonzales on Tuesday morning August 29 at 9 o'clock by Rev James Winterich. The couple, both from Gonzales area families, were attended by a bridal party with Lillie Hanzlik maid of honor and Eric Luedecke best man. After a family dinner and a dance at Dilworth the couple were toasted with best wishes for happiness.
In San Antonio Texas Aug 27 a communist meeting under mayoral protection was broken up by a crowd of about 5000. At least 15 injured as police and firemen used tear gas and water cannons. Police chief Ray Ashworth and Rev M Valenta among those hurt. Demonstration stemmed from protests over a permit to use the World War memorial auditorium.
The Lavaca County Rural teacher trustee meeting will be held at Hallettsville High School on Saturday September 2 at 9:15 AM. County trustees are invited to attend and all teachers should be present to register. Mr W H Bankston Deputy State Superintendent will address the meeting.
The Shiner Public Schools begin Monday September 4 at 9 o clock with a special program in the new Gymnasium. No school Monday afternoon. Regular classes start Tuesday at 8 15. Buildings are in order with new equipment and an annex repainted.

The Methodist Ladies Aid and the Hallettsville Missionary Society hosted a joint gathering at Mrs. A. Guyon’s Hallettsville home last Wednesday. Mrs. Arthur Kasper led a brief business session before Mrs. Max L. Wolters conducted a Bible lesson. Mrs. Farley Turk spoke on scripture, refreshments were served, Bible Lotto was played, and the next meeting was set for Sept 27 at Mrs. J. W. Boyte’s home.

Dreyer Ladies Aid Society hosts a 42 party on Wednesday night September 13 starting at 8. Refreshments will be served. Admission costs 15 cents for adults and 10 cents for children. Everyone is invited.
Rural Supervisor Lawrence D. Smith announced that Saturday September 2 will be the last day tenants may turn in applications to purchase farms under the Farm Bankhead Jones Act. Applications may be turned in to the County Agent in Lavaca County at the courthouse.

Community effort backs a permanent Shiner Boy Scout organization with pledges already strong though full troop organization remains. Local support, led by Mr. C. E. Newman district supervisor, targets a monthly quota of 30,000 with Camp Wooten camping next summer and applications via Scout Master Paul Klekar and Assistants Garbade and Marcak.

Mr and Mrs Frank Schovajsa Jr and Mr and Mrs F L Schovajsa attend Austin graduation on Monday August 28 as their daughter Emilie Schovajsa pursues a B A degree. The Gazette joins friends in congratulating her achievement and notes she will resume work as a primary teacher in Marlow School near Needville.
A special call meeting of the Lutheran Women's Society is set for Friday September 1 at 6 o'clock at the Luther Church. Members are urged to be present.
Tom Malina of Rt 2 gathered corn and presented a black widow to the Gazette office. He says this year brings an unusually large number of these spiders.
