L. M. Roeder, public weigher, reports 3927 bales of new cotton received up to Tuesday night August 26. The 1956 count was 3379, 1955 had 7954, and 1954 reached 6428. The first bale this year arrived July 24, while last year's first bale arrived August 5.
The Shiner Post Office will be closed all day Monday September 1 for Labor Day and there will be no rural delivery.
The Capitol Area Council of Boy Scouts leads Region 9 Texas Oklahoma New Mexico in a fall 1958 roundup to add members and units. Harold Lewman reports 11 000 members and 385 units with an 8 1/2 percent gain and 26 more units as Shiner leaders push Cub Boy and Explorer programs. Buddy night planned in September October to invite peers to unit meetings and showcase Scouting skills. Local units include Pack 231 at United Dr Martin Luther Church and Troop 231 Shiner Business Men’s Club with Scoutmaster Harvey A Barsch. Pack 232 Knights of Columbus with multiple leaders. Troop 232 Knights of Columbus led by Dr August A Darilek Jr with Dr Robert J Wagner assisting.
Col Homer Garrison Jr of the Texas Department of Public Safety calls on drivers, Gov Price Daniel, and business and civic groups to make Labor Day free of traffic deaths. The plan, Operation Motorcide, predicts about 29 fatalities and urges safe speeds and vigilance during the 72 hour holiday.
President C. C. Welhausen of Tex-Tan will tour seven European countries to study market conditions for Tex-Tan and General American Industries. The two and a half month trip starts September 5 from Houston Airport and includes Holland Germany Switzerland Austria Italy France and England. He will survey manufacturers suppliers and markets and plan importing and exporting duties with wife and Mrs. Harper accompanying.
Robert W. Hamilton of El Paso defeated Edwin Smith of Houston for Associate Justice of the State Supreme Court. State totals show Hamilton 293,835 to Smith 244,693 with Lavaca County voting 281 for Hamilton and 228 for Smith out of 509 ballots. Nationwide turnout neared 600,000, well above pre election estimates. Shiner precincts reported 66 ballots 34 East box 32 West box with listed officials.
The St. Mary's Deanery Skating Party will be held Thursday night August 28 at Pecan Grove. Come out for an evening of fun with your friends.
Maurice Ward lost the tip of his right index finger when a wooden folding lawn chair collapsed as he sat down at home. Neighbors aided him and he was rushed to the hospital where doctors had to remove the rest of the finger to the first joint due to crushed bone.
Funeral services for Mrs Louis Laas were held August 21 at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner with Rev Edwin J Oehlke officiating. She died August 20 at 5 15 p m after a prolonged illness. Interment in Charlottenburg Cemetery. Survived by daughters Pauline and Bertha and sister Mrs Edmund Laas Schulenburg.
The Wesley Class reports a highly successful rummage sale last Saturday. Donations were generous and the sale will reopen this coming Saturday with marked down items including merchandise dishes bedding costume jewelry and kitchen utensils. Notify the committee before Friday if you missed sending in goods.
The St. Ludmila P TA will hold its first meeting of the term on Monday September 8 at 3 45 p m in the high school auditorium Parents are urged to attend to pay dues and meet the faculty The meeting is described as very important and well attended.

Shiner Catholic Parish invites residents and visitors to Legion Park for a Sunday August 31 picnic and bazaar. Masses start early, meals cost 1.00 for adults 50 cents for children, with a 3:30 pm auction of cotton livestock and goods and a 5:30 pm supper. Joe Patek’s Orchestra will play.

The Lavaca County Unit of the American Cancer Society will screen Breast Self-Examination at Cole Theatre Hallettsville at 10:00 am and Palace Theatre Shiner at 2:00 pm on September 16 1958 free of charge. A physician will answer questions after each showing and groups may request special showings. The film promotes early detection of breast cancer and cites an 81 percent cure rate when treated early.
The Shiner Public School begins Monday September 1 with full classes and cafetorium meals. Prices rise to 25 to 30 cents per meal. meal tickets available from the superintendent. Grades 9-12 register Thursday, buses idle then. elementary principal Gordon O Neal arrives from Gail, Texas.
Shiner's water system set a record last month with 20,493,000 gallons used. Two main pumps ran nonstop while the 200,000 gallon tower was filled, with consumption averaging about 470 gallons per minute across a 24 hour day. The Spoetzl Brewery accounts for roughly one sixth of total use.
