Shiner VFW Picnic Planned at Sulphur Park

Plans are complete for the annual VFW Picnic sponsored by Shiner Memorial Post 6209 at Sulphur Park Swimming Pool on Sunday August 24. Supper starts at 5 00 p m featuring chicken barbecue with all the trimmings. Entertainment for the whole family includes music by the Pearl Polka Boys with a free dance at night and plenty of cold drinks on hand.

Crowell Couple Relocate To Shiner Welcome Home

Mr and Mrs Joe Drabek of Crowell Texas arrived in Shiner last week Tuesday to start a new home they bought the Tillie Fietsam house They sold their Crowell farm northwest of Crowell where they lived 37 years to their son Charlie Mr Drabek came to Crowell 47 years ago and the couple have been married 45 years Rosa Pechacek born in Shiner now Mrs Drabek is welcomed and wished happiness in their new home

DeDear Receives Texas Lutheran College Scholar ship

Dennis DeDear, a 1958 Shiner High School graduate, accepted a football and baseball scholarship to Texas Lutheran College Seguin. He lettered in four sports, captained football as junior and senior, and led in scoring 1957. He plans to major in physical education and coach.

Tragic Harlingen gun play ends in boy's death

Eight year old Reuben Hauschild Jr. was fatally shot when a pistol discharged while he and two companions, Charlie McCallam and Joe Lee Hauschild, handled a .22 automatic outside 105 E Beck St Harlingen. Charlie McCallam held the weapon. the accident occurred shortly before 2 30 p m. Reuben died at Valley Baptist Hospital. Funeral services were planned for Aug 11 at 10 am with Kreidler Aschcraft in charge.

Fire destroys George Shimek home in rural Texas

Firefighters answered a midnight alarm at the Shimek residence on the Shi ner Hallettsville highway. The home and furnishings were total losses, with only baby clothes and a bed saved. Residents are asked to call the Gazette at 4 3346 if they can aid with household items.

Twister Wrecks 30-Ft Cow Shed in County Weather

Heavy showers and lightning moved across the county last Thursday with a thunder cloud over the F A Dolezal farm. A twister ripped away a 30 foot cow shed and scattered lumber, but no other damage or injuries were reported.

Mae Blohm Saling Buried In Graveside Rites

Mae Ellen Blohm Saling of Houston died August 11 1958 at 7:50 p.m. at age 51 after years of illness. Graveside services were held August 13 in Shiner City Cemetery with Rev. John C. Gilbert, buffington funeral home assisting. She was born June 8 1907 in Shiner to Adolph J and Minna Blohm. She married Charles H Saling October 10 1932 in Lake Charles Louisiana and lived in Houston 38 years. She is survived by her husband her parents a sister Stella Valenta and many friends.

Shiner High Opens Sept 1 After August 28 Registration

Shiner High School will open Monday September 1 with grades 9 through 12 attending regular classes. Registration for students is set for August 28. Bus routes will run on normal schedules. The detailed six week and holiday schedule follows through May 26-26 teacher clearance days.

Car Hits Dirt Pile Injuring Couple Near Shiner

Mrs Benedict Molnovskey and her husband were injured when their 1953 Ford struck a dirt pile dumped by a county crew on Vlastenec Road 2.7 miles south of Shiner at 12 15 Friday afternoon. They, and their son Patrick, were taken to Wagner Hospital in Shiner for treatment and checks. Damages were listed at 175 dollars.

Spoetzl Brewery Adds New Delivery Truck in Shiner

The Spoetzl Brewery unveiled a Chevrolet 10 000 Series V 8 delivery truck built in San Antonio by Bedell and delivered by Shiner Motor Sales. The truck carries 600 cases of Shiner beer plus keg beer and features air brakes and power steering. Joe Green, a 25 year employee, notes a history of miles driven and recalls a wartime truck with 100 000 mile milestones.
