Friday afternoon the Gazette man broke a bone in his right foot stepping on a step. It is a clean break, a cast weighing about one pound will be worn for four to six weeks, slowing him to a snail pace with left leg complications and a large cast on the right.
W. M. Chenault suffered a compound fracture of the left leg above the ankle on Tuesday morning August 18 while writing balls for Willie Borcher of Yoakum on the Turner place in Hochheim. He is in Wagner Hospital after surgery last Thursday.
J H West president of the Texas Farm Bureau explains the September referendum on continuing the compulsory wool check off for incentive payments to 1961. He stresses the policy favors voluntary programs and that the vote does not alter the wool incentive. two thirds approval would keep payments of up to one cent per pound of wool and five cents per hundred pounds of live lamb. The Farm Bureau notes more than 12 million dollars has been spent promoting wool and lamb with no clear benefit to sheep producers.
J. M. Smith of Farmers Insurance Group Safety Foundation urges a stay at home holiday. He cites National Safety Council data indicating about 440 deaths during the three day weekend and up to 580 to 600 including those who later die, urging families to remain home.

A buzz grew as clean donations flooded the former Post Office building for the Wesley Bible Class rummage sale announced for Saturday, August 29. Visitors will find a splendid array at bargain prices.
Thomas Alfonso Marcak of Deming New Mexico died August 13 1959 in UCLA Hospital Los Angeles at 56 years 9 months 19 days. He had lived in Shiner and Deming and left eight children. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery Deming with services at Mahoney Funeral Home.
Otto C. Remmers of the Drey er Community is named to the Gonzales County Farmers Home Administration Committee. He replaces Joe G. Dodson whose term ended June 30 1959. The panel also includes Bert O. Ehrig and H. W. Schieberle. The group reviews loan applications and helps shape local FHA policy for farming loans and soil and water conservation projects.
Texas enacts HB 36 making trespassing illegal for hunting fishing or camping on private land without owner consent. Penalties include up to 30 days in jail a $500 fine and license forfeiture for three years upon conviction. Enforced by peace officers without warrant. game wardens notify landowners for arrests.
Mrs. Anna Louise Pieper 89 of 1405 Indiana Houston died at 5 10 AM Wednesday August 19 in a Houston hospital Survivors include two daughters three sons and two steps with several grandchildren and great grandchildren She was a member of the First Evangelical Church Services were held at Hyde Park Chapel in Houston with Rev Stanley C Altrock officiating The body lay in state at Zion Lutheran Church Moulton Then burial occurred at Moulton City Cemetery Hyde Park Funeral Home Houston arranged the services Mrs A W Nollkamper of Shiner attended the funeral
The Texas Department of Public Safety said starting September 1 beginning patrolmen will earn 325 dollars while in training, rising to 350 during field training and 365 to 388 after full training. Applications closed September 7 for about 80 vacancies across four services. exams set September 15 to 17.

Public weigher L M Roeder reports 4 646 bales of new cotton received up to Tuesday night August 25. This compares with 3 927 bales for the same date last year and recalls earlier 1957, 1956, 1955 and 1954 totals for context.
