Sgt. Gus A. Elsik son of Mr and Mrs John H Elsik has been cited by his commanding general for meritorious service in the Tunisian campaign. Winters Named Executive Director of State Welfare Dept
Austin Aug 10 The State Board of Public Welfare announced the appointment of John H Winters as executive director of the state department of public welfare. Winters was not an applicant but was asked to accept the position by unanimous vote. He has served as Potter County commissioner for six years and is completing his fourth term. He is the only county commissioner to have been elected president of the county judges and commissioners association of Texas, term expiring in November 1942.

John Mueller, long a respected Shiner community member now living in Nordheim, died August 19 at 5:15 am at Fritz Harbers home. He was 79 years, 3 months, 21 days old. Funeral services were held at United Dr. Martin Luther Church with Rev. Schuetze and Dr. Wolfsdorf, burial in Shiner City Cemetery. Surviving: wife, one son Hugo Mueller, a granddaughter Doris Marie, three stepsons Fritz Harbers, Emil and Anton Harbers, one sister, one brother, and several step grandchildren and a daughter who died in infancy. The Gazette extends condolences to family and friends.
