Red Calhoun remembered as fiery South Texas catcher
Shiner area fans recount Lowell "Red" Calhoun a standout catcher in Guadalupe Valley semi pro leagues. Born 1915 near San Marcos, he played four sports in high school, starred for Shiner Brewers 1939 1947, and earned Old Timers Baseball Association Hall of Fame honors. He married in 1942, later managed Lavacans, and remained a lifelong sports advocate in Victoria.

Milton B. Mikes 48 of 1510 E Guadalupe Victoria died August 7 1975 after a long illness. Services were held at Colonial Funeral Home and Memorial Park Cemetery with VFW Post 4146 graveside rites. He was a WWII veteran and a BD E Drilling roughneck. Survivors include wife Evelyn Mueller Mikes daughters Janice Ullman Beverly Walters son Wesley Dean Mikes and extended family.

GCCOG Offers EMT and AC Vocational Classes
The Golden Crescent Council of Governments invites applications for two Victoria College taught programs. The EMT class starts September 2 1975 and the Air Conditioning class begins around October or November. Enrollment is through the GCCOG Manpower Office at 112 So Liberty with Texas Employment Commission coordination. Thirty eight students will be paid minimum wage for 40 hours weekly over 26 weeks, and some travel stipends may be provided. Must come from lower income groups and be certified disadvantaged. The Texas Association of Citizens for Local Land Control formed to oppose federal land use laws. Lavaca County Chairman Tommy Schlein will lead membership drives and educate property owners about the Flood Disaster Protection Act of 1973. Drowning Death of Carl Eggemeyer Near Cuero
The body of 15 year old Carl Eggemeyer of Yoakum was recovered from the Guadalupe River two miles southwest of Cuero at 3 pm Monday August 4 1975. He drowned while attempting to swim across during a family outing after his friend John Magraver tried to aid him. A 12 foot river boat carrying his father Clarence Meyers and Buzz Walters sank about 300 yards downstream. Rosary was said in Yoakum and Mass of the Resurrection held at St Joseph s Church with burial in St Joseph Cemetery. He was a son in a local farming family and student in Yoakum with prior residence in Hallettsville. He was a supervisor for Tex Tan Welhausen Company and survived by his parents six siblings and several grandparents.
