Notes and Comments from a Small-Town Gazette
The 6:00 p.m. fire alarm at the Catholic Church recalls a 1923 incident when a swarm of flies and gnats prompted a fire response. Fire Chief Emeritus Ad Richter and Erwin Wagener remember the event. The Bartak homecoming brought a ruined nylon tent and camp gear after a flash flood washed away camp equipment. Lt. Bartak’s car was wrecked in New Orleans, delaying his return to North Carolina.
