Shiner Team Wins Yoakum Youth Baseball Tourney Final

The Shiner 11 and 12 year old team captured the Yoakum youth baseball title with a 7-6 win over Hallettsville in six innings. Shiner advanced by beating Karnes City 7-3 and Yoakum 7-3, with Hallettsville topping Columbus and La Grange before the final. Claude Barton Jacobs hosted the awards program as Yoakum promoters concluded a strong tournament drawing hundreds from Schulenburg Sheridan Hallettsville La Grange and more.

County Judge Announces Saturday Closure of Courthouse

Shiner Little League All Stars win Yoakum tourney final 7-6

The Shiner Little League All Stars captured first place in the Yoakum Youth Tournament beating Hallsville 7-6 in the final after defeating Karnes City 7-3 and Yoakum No 2 7-3. Bruce Pohler and Elroy Obold each starred on the mound with Za ruba catching. Billie Simper and Dennis Aschenbeck contributed key hits as awards were presented including a $75 donation for expenses and miniature trophies.

VFW and Auxiliary Plan Annual Picnic in Shiner

VFW Post 6209 and Ladies Auxiliary announce their annual picnic at Legion Park in Shiner on Sunday August 18. Committees say the event will be one of the largest ever, with a family style fried chicken and Shiner Picnic Stew lunch at 11 a.m. and a 4 p.m. auxiliary served meal. Music by the Quintettes will provide daytime and dance music at night. Next week's Gazette will publish a full schedule.

Texas adopts new compulsory school attendance law

The Texas Legislature passed a reform requiring every child aged seven to sixteen who is not a high school graduate or exempt to attend public school for at least 165 days per regular term. Parochial school students remain exempt under Article 2893, with the law effective August 23, 1963.
