John Maeker Sr Dies in Victoria at 87

John Maeker Sr died April 19 1971 at Citizens Memorial Hospital Victoria after a week as a patient. Funeral held April 21 in Shiner Buffington Funeral Home with Rev Kenneth Carmichael officiating. Burial was in Shiner City Cemetery. He lived in El Campo 25 years and was survived by two sons two brothers a sister 8 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

Judge Paul C. Boethel of the 25th Judicial District plans resignation to Gov. Preston Smith effective May 1. The 68 year old Hallettsville resident has served about 11 years on the bench. His retirement prompts talk of potential successors with two area lawyers already visiting Austin.

Special Attractions At July 4th Hospital Benefit Event

Shiner Hospital benefit plans a country store with home canned goods to bolster donations for the July 4th event. A bake shop is planned with home baked items and volunteers may leave contributions at local groceries.

Military Honors For WWI Veteran Homer Schelling

Homer Arthur Schelling died April 23 1971 in Shiner Hospital at 75 years. Full military honors were rendered at his funeral held at United Dr. Martin Luther Church with services by Rev. Clifford C. Grosenbacher. The ceremony included color guards flag bearers and a taps salute. Survivors include his wife Evelyn Schelling two children Homer Robert Schelling Mabel Jean Michalk Loretta Krejci and six others. He served in the U S Army 1917 1919 with the AEF and fought in the St Mihiel and Meuse Argonne campaigns being wounded in action. He is interred with a U S flag presented to his wife.

Moody Foundation Grants 42500 To Bluebonnet Youth Ranch

The Moody Foundation of Galveston approved a 42500 grant for the Bluebonnet Youth Ranch near Yoakum. The funds will finish new construction as the first unit for ten boys and two houseparents opens later this summer or fall four miles south of Yoakum on a forty acre tract. Memorial gifts and memberships will support ongoing operations.

Obituary for Mrs. Jos Simper Beloved Shiner Resident

Mrs. Jos Simper nee Emilie Becka dies at 81 in Shiner Texas. Born 1889 near Half Moon she married Joseph Simper in 1911 and farmed locally. The Shiner Game and Fish League entertainment committee schedules a hunting film and prizes at the annual meeting on Thursday May 6. Clippers Win First In Second Annual Baseball Tourney

The Shiner Clippers captured the Second Annual Clipper Baseball Tournament by winning three games in 24 hours from April 16 to 18, 1971. They beat Yoakum Indians 2-1, Flatonia Wildcats 2-1, and La Grange Demons 3-2. The Turek brothers Bill and Mike delivered the most spectacular action in the event.

Moulton School Board approves erecting a marker and structure for the old bell from the Sam and Will Moore Institute.
