Lavaca County 4-H Dress Review Held in Hallettsville Gym

About 250 attended the Lavaca County 4-H Dress Review at Hallettsville High School. Fifty three girls modeled dresses judged for workmanship and suitability with three judges listing junior and senior winners and a district entry to Gonzales on May 3.

Mrs Michalee Michalec Rites In Moulton Catholic Church

Mrs Rosalie Michalec nee Zavesky died at 93 in Moulton. Her wake was at Smith Funeral Home with nightly Rosaries, and services were held at the funeral home and St Joseph Church with Rev John Matocha officiating. Interment followed at Catholic Cemetery. Surviving: three daughters, five sons, 68 grandchildren, 144 great grandchildren, 9 great great grandchildren, one brother. One daughter and husband had predeceased her.

Funeral rites for Mrs. Albert Katy Vincik age 76 were held Sunday at 3 from Buffington Funeral Home Shiner. She was born April 21 1875 in Prada Texas married 1893 in Flatonia. She died April 18 at home. Burial in S P I S T Cemetery Shiner. Survived by six daughters four sons and numerous grandchildren.

Knights of Columbus delegates named for state meeting

Over 100 members attended the Knights of Columbus meeting on April 17. Chaplain Father Peter Roebrooks and local pastor Father John J. Hanacek gave inspirational talks. Last Call For Paper Drive By Girl Scouts

April 25 is the last day for pickup on a paper drive by Girl Scouts Troops 2 and 3. City Council Secures Lower Fire Insurance Rate

The City of Shiner reports a 15 percent fire rate reduction to 35 cents after purchasing a new fire pump and improving water supply and pumping facilities. The city has maintained a maximum Good Fire Record for 28 years, with 16 years at 15 percent and 12 years at 25 percent, promising insurance savings and urging citizen cooperation.

Smolik Quits After 10 Years In Office

Lavaca County Tax Assessor-Collector John L. Smolik will not seek re election after a decade in the post with no opponent to date. He began as deputy to E A Turk and later served under Henry Schornack and W J Prasek. Two candidates had filed for the office Frances Bennett and Ernest Schultz.

Firemen Attend Goliad Convention in April Meet

The Thirty Second Semi Annual Guadalupe Firemen's Association Convention was held in Goliad on Sunday April 20. Eleven teams entered the pumper races and Shiner tied for fourth. The Go liad Ladies Auxiliary hosted visiting ladies during the business session. Notable speakers included Hon. Olin Culberson of Austin, chairman of the Texas Railroad Commission and official of the State Firemen's and Fire Marshal's Association. Attendees from Shiner included John Valis and families, Geo Valis, Bennie Simper family, Albert Simper, Jerry Mikes, Frankie Migl, Emil Schacherl, Joe Koncaba, Ad Richter, F. C. Krause, and Wilbur Minear.

The Shiner Game & Fish Protective League holds its annual membership meeting on Thursday May 1 at 7 PM at the League picnic grounds in Welhausen pasture.
