Registration For 1971 72 Kindergarten Program

The Shiner Independent School District announces a pre kindergarten spring round up for eligible students for the 1971 72 term. Eligible children must be 5 years 2 months by July 1 1971 and may register April 20 at 9 00 a m in the public school cafeteria. Parents should bring birth certificates and immunization records. questions will be answered and a screening test may be given if income limits apply.

Henry Zacharias of Route 4 Cuero died in a Cuero hospital Saturday April 3 1971 at 75. Burial was at Westside Cemetery Yorktown. Survived by wife Clara two sons Victor and Gene Houston a stepson Edgar Lee Staley Yoakum sister Annie Hoerig Shiner and a long line of relatives attended including Hoerig Huber Veit Hohlt and others.

Grandson of Macha Dies in Freer Crash

Robert Norman Stewart 18, son of Roy N. and Viola Stewart of San Antonio, was killed about 9:50 p.m. Saturday April 3 1971 in a one vehicle crash near Freer. He rode with Jerry W. Osborn in a pickup used during a rattlesnake hunt. Funeral services were held April 6 at Trinity Assembly Church. Burial at Sunset Memorial Park. Third Annual Polka W altz Celebration At Moulton VFW Hall

The third Czech German Polka Waltz celebration returns to Moulton VFW Hall on Sunday April 18 rain or shine. Genevieve Hagan Found Beaten And Stabbed To Death

Genevieve Hagan 29 of Houston was found beaten and stabbed in her apartment at 3011 Ella about 11 a.m. Friday April 2 1971. The body showed six stab wounds to the back and head injuries with a cast iron pan nearby. Her hands and ankles were tied and she was gagged. a robbery motive was not evident. Darrell Allen, 2, her son, was unharmed and with relatives. Funeral services were held April 5 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Moulton with burial at Moulton Catholic Cemetery. Surviving are her father Wm H Kleihege two brothers and one sister. She was born November 28 1941 in Lavaca County.

Tim Kosler to Be Ordained Priest in Shiner

Two San Antonio archdiocese natives, Rev. Mr. Timothy Kosler and Rev. Mr. Joseph Aguirre Lopez, will be ordained this April. Kosler will be ordained at 7 p.m. April 23 at Sts. Cyril and Methodius in Shiner with a reception later at the Shiner American Legion Hall. Lopez is to be ordained at 6 p.m. April 16 at Our Lady Queen of Peace in Kenedy. Kosler’s Mass of Thanksgiving is set for 9:30 a.m. April 25 at the same church followed by his first blessing at 3 p.m.

Rites Monday For Carl A. Albrecht

Funeral services for Carl A. Albrecht were held at 9 a.m. Monday in the Shiner Catholic Church with Requiem Mass offered by Msgr. John J. Hanacek. Burial followed in the Shiner Catholic Cemetery with Shiner American Legion post 201 conducting graveside rites. Albrecht, 78, died April 9 1971 at Roma Nursing Home Three Rivers after a long life in the Shiner area and prior residences in Oklahoma and Yoakum. He served in World War I and was a retired farmer. he never married and was born March 27 1891 near Witting Lavaca County Texas. He is survived by siblings including Maggie Marburger and Lorene Devine-Oberding, plus a large extended family.

Mrs Joe Furch nee Caroline Svoboda of El Campo died March 31 1971 at Nightmare Hospital age 80 years 7 months 17 days Funeral services were held from Triska Funeral Home Chapel April 2 with a Requiem Mass at St Philip s Catholic Church Burial at Holy Cross Memorial Park Pall bearers included William L Furch Robert J Furch Leroy Dornak Louis and Dennis Pustka Jerome Pustka Survived by husband Joe Furch two daughters Adell Pustka and Marie Dornak a son Robert Furch 16 grandchildren 14 great grandchildren She was born August 14 1890 in Shiner Lavaca County Texas to Joseph and Agnes Svoboda and married in Shiner October 24 1912 The couple farmed then moved to Floresville and Shiner before settling in El Campo in 1928 They farmed until 1938 when Mr Furch began work in rice mills until retirement She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and belonged to St Philip s KJZT and SPJST Lodge.

Rep Tim Von Dohlen plans to attend the Shiner Hospital Benefit Celebration at Legion Park on July 4 1971. He notes will stay for the parade and part of the day and supports efforts to save smaller hospitals.
