Grand Jury Indicts Six in Hallettsville County
The Grand Jury sitting in spring session indicted six individuals on felony charges. Among the accused are Joe J. Mikush charged with forging instruments and misappropriation with a second offense, Hubert Clark for child desertion, Leon Heinrichs for swindling with a worthless check, Billy Ballard Paul Murphy and Albert Blair for theft, and Tommie McKenzie Grover Castleberry and Jimmy Castleberry for burglary. The panel also urged county facility repairs including jail housing for female prisoners and courthouse upgrades.

Legion Annual Spring Convention Set for Hallettsville
Twenty six American Legion Posts will be honored at the Ninth District Spring Convention in Hallettsville on April 16 and 17. Commander Arthur Stratmann of Post 230 and Shiner 201 commander Melvin Harbers are among the recipients. Registration opens at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Legion Hall with a social hour at 5 30 p.m. and a 8 p.m. dance. Sunday starts with 8 a.m. registration and a 7 a.m. breakfast at the Bel Air Motel. The joint Legion and Auxiliary session opens at 9 15 a.m. District leaders include Jack Sidwell of Freeport and Billy McClung. Mayor Bozka and Senator Krueger deliver addresses. Judge Boethel gives the principal address. Memorial service led by the Memorial Squad from Anahuac. Father Valenta delivers a sermonette. Lunch follows at noon. business sessions conclude the day with remarks by W H McGregor and Wilson Turner. Delegates to the National Convention in Washington, D C in August will be elected. Shiner delegates include Harbers, Schierschwitz, and the Dolezals. Auxiliary delegates named.

Funeral services were held April 12 at Buffington Funeral Home with a Requiem Mass at Shiner Catholic Church and burial in Shiner Catholic Cemetery.

State Convention Dates In Fort Worth And Fire Department Upgrades
The State Convention will be held in Fort Worth on June 14 15 and 16. The Shiner Fire Department reports March purchases of 300 feet of hose and three fighting masks funded from the treasury at 633.00 dollars. A Firemen's Training School at Texas A M is planned with hopes two or three members will attend. Dues and fines collected total 5.50 dollars. The meeting adjourned after roll call with no further business.

Pioneer Citizen Mrs. Caroline Valenta Dies at 95
The Shiner community lists Mrs. Caroline Valenta as a beloved mother and pioneer resident who died March 17 1966 at age 95 after a long life in Texas. She and husband John Valenta helped found Shiner Oil Mill and Manufacturing Co and she leaves six children, twelve grandchildren and numerous relatives. Funeral services were held March 19 at Buffington Funeral Home and Shiner Catholic Church with a rosary recited the prior evening. Burial followed in Shiner City Cemetery.
