The alderman election totaled 169 votes with Glade Welhausen leading at 153. Felix L Hybner received 109 and C Amsler 65, with one complimentary vote to O A Anpe. The same trio oversaw the trustee election.
In the Shiner Independent School District election held Saturday the total votes cast was 80. Arthur Ward and James Buske each received 78 votes. Mrs. Isabel Thulemeyer and W. G. Stindt each received two complimentary votes. F. R. Mergenthaler was assisted in holding the election by Johnnie Kasper and Oscar Lichey. The vote was an advance tribute of approval and encouragement to these young men.
Catholic Youth Organization holds a special meeting on Wednesday April 21 at 7 30 p m in the parish hall. Election of officers to be conducted. The parish youth urged to attend.
A very important call meeting of the American Legion Post is announced for Friday night April 9 at 7 30 o'clock in the Legion Club room. Every member of Kolar Staken Post is urged to be present as building plans will be discussed.
The Ladies of Good Will Society announce a park social at Witting Park on Sunday April 11 starting at 2 PM and continuing through day and night. Everyone is invited to attend this community outing.
The Blessed Virgin Mary Society will hold a special called meeting after the 8 oclock Mass on Sunday April 11. All members are urged to attend.
The first wedding after Lent at Sts. Cyril and Methodius church united Miss Helen Patek and Benedict Matula in holy matrimony. Nuptial Mass occurred Tuesday at 9 am with Rev. J. J. Hanacek officiating. Witnesses were Joe Gaka and Victor Patek.
Raymond Dierksen has purchased the Goetz Service Station in Shiner. The deal closed March 5. A WWII veteran, Dierksen plans to operate Raymond's Auto Supply with a full line of auto parts, accessories, and Goodyear tires, seeking continued patronage from the community.
Shiner hosted the District 63 B Interscholastic League Meet with 12 schools participating Sheridan Shiner Schulenburg Weimar Waelder Hallettsville Moulton Flatonia Breslau Rock Island Komensky and Witting The event drew several hundred students across literary contests tennis playground baseball volleyball and boys track and field Judges from San Marcos prepared literary rounds with Dr Alvin Musgrave Jo Bennett and Dr Arthur Grusendorf among others Track and field events were completed before the report went to press with a full literary contest summary promised in a future issue
The American Legion Auxiliary will meet Thursday April 8 at 7 30 p m at the Library. All members are urged to attend this important meeting.
Mr and Mrs Jerry L Lopa announce the birth of their first child a baby girl born April 1 at the local hospital weighing seven pounds two ounces
Louis Kuchar age 59 died April 5 after a long illness. Funeral from the family home near Mount Olive School on April 7 at 9 am then Requiem Mass at Sweet Home Catholic Church. Interment in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Survived by wife Mary Mekar Kuchar, son Frank near Mt Olive, daughter Anita Siegel, three brothers and one sister. Pallbearers include nephews John Robert Matt Eddie Jim and Adolph Chuder.
Three members of the Legion building committee attended the auction at Camp Swift and bought a Post Exchange building 50 by 144 feet. Tearing down and moving the structure will begin at once, adding to Shiner’s ongoing building boom.
Decoration Day services are scheduled for Sunday April 11 at 3 PM with hymns prayers and remarks by Rev Edwin J Oehlke Rev W L Hightower and Rev J E Early. The Lutheran and United Choirs perform and free will offerings are collected at all gates for the Shiner Cemetery Association.
Commissioners propose a 600000 bond to raise 0.30 tax per 100 valuation for road improvement 350000 bridge repair 150000 and road equipment up to 100000. Funds allocated by precinct need and aims to improve main roads first using local materials over two to three years to maximize results.
Athey's Ready-to-Wear and Furniture Store celebrates its first anniversary with an in-store event through April 30. Owner Mr. Athey expanded from a small shop beside the Texaco office into a larger, corner location with new display windows and a moved Ready-to-Wear section. The furniture room remains in the original building and all customers are welcomed with a friendly reception.
Funeral rites honored Mrs. Ben Tenberg Sr. nee Aimee Weinholdt born July 19 1863 in Austin County. She died March 31 in Corpus Christi at age 84 and was buried in City Cemetery after services at First Baptist Church. Surviving children include Delphine Draeger Hilda Draeger Som merlatte Paul Tenberg Ben Tenberg II Willie Alfred Tenberg and two sisters.
The Business Men's Club will hold its regular meeting tonight at 7 30 at the Game and Fish Reserve grounds with members asked to bring a bowl and spoon. The piece also includes a tribute to a longtime resident Christi who died after 65 years in the area and leaves a community mourning a devoted family woman.
A meeting for cotton producers and users will be held at Shiner City Hall Monday night April 12 at 8 pm. W. J. Landry of the National Cotton Council will present a movie and explain council efforts to expand cotton uses including fireproof fiber insulation and applications for low grade cottons.
A qualified voter must reside in the county and precinct, own taxable property in the county at the time of voting, and have rendered the same for taxation for state and county purposes for either 1947 or 1948.
