Easter Themed Mother-Daughter Banquet Recap

The annual event Tuesday night featured Iona Mae Discher as president and Mrs Thomas Hughs as a responder. Guest speaker Miss Elizabeth Yarling from Haslettsville shared the message for mothers and daughters. Performers Iona Mae Discher Olive Jean Heinsohn and Ruby Menke sang The Stars Will Remember. The menu included turkey peas in the basket egg salad giblet gravy dressing rolls butter iced tea and ice cream. Ten F F A boys assisted with service and were thanked.

Trustee Elections Across Several Schools April 3

Multiple school trustee elections set for Saturday April 3. Michna Beasley district polls 1 to 7 pm at Michna school. Bunjes 1 to 6 pm. Boundary Line Kopecky 9 am to 2 pm. Kokernot 8 am to 12 noon. Green School 1 to 6 pm. Trustees named include Ernest Kral and John A Kutac.

Printing veteran Henry J. Strauss joins La Grange Journal

Henry J. Strauss, with 25 years in printing, bought an interest in the La Grange Journal. He trained at the Hallettsville Herald and worked at the Schlienburg Sticker and El Campo Citizen where he was foreman. The Strauss family of six will move to La Grange when housing is ready.

Spring Cleanup Week Set by Gov Jester in Texas

Gov Jester proclaims April 4 to 10 as Spring Cleanup Week urging residents to clear eyesores in homes yards and garages. Dispose of oily rags and cleaning cloths in a covered metal container and air out mops to reduce fire hazards.

In Shiner the upcoming city election on Tuesday April 6 marks the first ballot in 26 years without Joe R. Mikesh. He notes the time is right for younger residents to take on community duties. Mikesh’s long service as sanitary department chairman helped shape the town’s civic beauty and value.

Last Rites Held For E. Herman Thursday

Funeral services for Ernest Herman Sr. who died Tuesday afternoon March 23 were held at Wied family residence and St Marys Catholic Church on Thursday March 25. He was born in Czechoslovakia and came to America in 1905 marrying Frances Motal at Shiner. He farmed in Wied, was a member of KJT and St Isidor lodges. Local Veterans Groups Plan Spring Softball Season

Committees of V F W Post 6209 and American Legion Post 201 finalize plans for a softball league at the local High School diamond with bleachers for 250. Texo Feed Service Open House In Shiner Area

Texo Feeds and Seeds announces an all day open house on Saturday April 3 at the Farmers Gin to introduce the Texo Feed Service for the Shiner trade. Les Miller and George Reese of Burrus Feed Mills will attend to offer free consultations on cattle hogs poultry and dairy stock health and feeding. The Shiner Farmers Cooperative Gin and Mill Association becomes exclusive dealer and will serve the community.

Free program for farmers and dairy producers at Shiner High

A dairy meeting will be held in Shiner High School Gym on Tuesday April 6 at 8 00 p m Farmers and dairymen of La vaca County and Shiner trade territory are invited to attend a milk and cream quality improvement meeting The Texas Dairy Products Association sponsors the series and several hundred farmers are expected There will be a display of dairy equipment a film on quality cream production and a talk by County Agent Mr Lindsey Equipment will be given away by Waldrop Creamery Ice cream will be served afterward.

Mrs Thulemeyer Retires From School Trustee Post

Mrs Isabel Thulemeyer retires after thirty years of continuous service to the school system. She served twenty four years since the new building was erected and six years as trustee of the old building. Thulemeyer aims to make way for younger servants of the people. W G Stindt, board president, also retires after twelve years of service and commends the effort of civic and educational upbuildings.

Dilworth Mission Church announces regular Sunday Mass at 8 a m starting April 4 at the new location on Highway 200 near Shiner. Parishioners recently moved from the village to the more accessible site to serve the Dilworth parish. Father R C Hoffmann will lead the services.

Rail hearing set in Giddings Friday at ten

Citizens are urged to attend the railroad hearing in Giddings Friday at 10 AM. Representation from Yoakum to Waco will be present, with Shiner urged to join to show support for preserving passenger service on trains 51 and 52. All interested should gather at the Gazette Office at 8 AM.

Funeral services for John Havel 68 a long time Komensky resident were held at Oehl Funeral Home Moulton with burial in Moulton City Cemetery The Rev W L Hightower officiated He was born Feb 6 1880 in Moravia Texas His wife Sophie Knezek and three daughters Mrs Martha Schwartz Mrs Alice Cuba of San Angelo Miss Hattie Havel of Bay City five grandchildren one sister Mrs Louise Kocick Schulenburg and two brothers E W Havel San Angelo Frank Havel Louise Texas survive The inquest verdict was death by his own action He had been ill and was found in an outbuilding at his home Mar 23 The family extends sympathy to the bereaved.

Louis B Smolka Buried Saturday

Louis B Smolka age 70 died March 24 at his Fordtran Texas residence after a short illness. He lay in state at Kabena Funeral Home Hallettsville and Buffington Funeral Home Yoakum conducted a 9:45 a.m. service with a 10 a.m. Requiem Mass at Yoakum Catholic Church. Born in Czechoslovakia he emigrated 66 years ago and lived 57 years in Fordtran as a blacksmith. Survived by wife Julia two daughters four grandchildren one son one brother and one sister.
