City Election Results Show Aldermen Elected

Tuesday’s city election saw 231 votes cast with two aldermen chosen. Ballots listed J. R. Mikes at 162 votes, Alois Kasper at 169, and Cc. C. Amsler with 89, reflecting the final tallies.

Funeral Held for Charles Netardus in Wied and St. Marys

Immense attendance marks funeral for Charles Netardus who died in an accidental home incident at Wied on March 26. Monsignor L P Netardus and several priests officiated at St Marys church with Junior Choir and pallbearers named. Netardus, born in Czechoslovakia, was a longtime farmer in St Marys and husband of Theresa Zarsky with four or five children.

Mrs Ther esie Kasper wife of Chas J Kasper died Thursday at 5 p m after a brave struggle with illness The Texan born Effenberger came to Texas in 1889 with her parents and settled near Schueblurg Fayette County Later the family moved to Lavaca County near Shiner She married Chas J Kasper in 1901 and leaves three daughters and one son Pallbearers included Ewald Effenberger Reuben Koether Elroy Koether Leo Ullman Ellwood Kasper and Gilbert Kasper Survivors also include husband three daughters Vera Kasper Mrs Otto Remmers Mrs Emil Kuck a son Charles Kasper and a grandson Oran Carl Remmers The Gazette offers sympathy to the family.

Each cast member earned praise for fine performance and Mrs. Lane was congratulated for an expert direction. The High School Band selections were enjoyed and the play benefited the band.

Remembering John Mraz Sr and Stephen Holchak

Obituaries detail the deaths of John Mraz Sr of Shiner and Stephen John Holchak of Robstown in separate train crash incidents. Mraz died March 28 in San Antonio after a long illness, with funeral and burial arrangements noted. Holchak, raised in Shiner, died in a grade crossing collision near Robstown, with services at the Robstown Methodist church and a large community turnout. Both families receive condolences from the Gazette and local residents.

Herbert Freytag of Flatonia Dies at 38

Herbert Freytag of Flatonia died at Shiner hospital Thursday night at age 38. Funeral services were held Saturday at 3 p.m. from the family residence and burial followed in Flatonia cemetery. The Rev. G. R. Hobson officiated. He is survived by his widow and two children Marvin and Audrey, his parents Mr. and Mrs. L Freytag, three brothers Robert of Three Rivers Walter P. of LaGrange Dr I P Freytag of Flatonia, and two sisters Norma Freytag of Flatonia and Mrs L Kidd of California.

The Shiner Brewers travel to Cuero Sunday to officially open South Central Texas league play against the Cuero Key Trotters. After an exhibition loss to Flatonia, the club plans to field a strong lineup for the opening game and hopes for a large local crowd at the Cuero diamond. The season schedule lists games through August with matches against Gonzales, Flatonia, Weimar, Luling, Schulenburg, Yoakum, Hallettsville, and others.

Eclipse of Sun Rings Texas Area Sunday Afternoon

An annular solar eclipse will occur Sunday afternoon between 2:15 and 5 o'clock. The belt spans a 160 mile wide path from Southern Louisiana across Texas to the Big Bend region and into Mexico. Astronomers note the ring appearance occurs when the moon covers the sun leaving a bright solar ring visible during the eclipse.
