Sherman Pranks at West Point Cadets in Humorous Tale
A New York Herald account recreates a joke by General Sherman played on two West Point cadets. Sherman recalls cadet life as he browses a cadet room, joking about chimneys, plunder, and past dormitory life, before lightheartedly admitting it was all his fancy. The anecdote ends with the cadets tense but amused, while Sherman’s genial image remains intact. The piece also mentions an old Maine farmhouse sale and reflections on kin and roots amid rural scenes and family graves.
