Inauguration Visit and Local Notices Across Towns

Shepherdstown sent a sizable delegation to Washington to witness the inauguration. A Maryland man walked six miles to pay his subscription. John F. Keller of Shepherdstown received a patent for a grain drill improvement. The Washington Conference of the M. E. Church met with Bishop Wylie presiding. Several local figures faced health and misfortune, including a paralyzed Charleston man, a 5 foot 4 inch hawk killed by Ellsworth Hill, and a fatal skating rink incident in Winchester. A new steam fire engine arrived in Shepherdstown. State health officials saw leadership changes in Wheeling, and Vice-President Hendricks passed through Martinsburg. The Camden Camden men engaged in plans for a milling operation in Charlestown, while a dynamite stash prompted police searches. A Martinsburg obituary notes Rose Fleming Coffimbarger, died of typhoid pneumonia after marriage, mourned by family. A new 1884 law limits livestock running at large, aiming to protect property.

A Stranger Amid the Scenes of His Beyhead

A gray headed man of about seventy arrived in Shepherdstown and sought familiar sights from his boyhood days. He recalled many local names and places, identified old landmarks, and revealed he was John Thomas Briscoe, raised in Aldie, Virginia, now living in Denver after thirty years in Warren County Indiana. He left home for Cleveland's inauguration but paused here to reconnect with former friends and acquaintances.

Shepherdstown Election Card Shows Candidacy and Withdrawals

A local election card lists B F Harrison for Mayor, J S Fleming for Recorder, and multiple council candidates. It notes withdrawals by J Hopaes and Jonx H Dukk, and announces Abraham Shepherd as a town sergeant candidate with an accompanying meeting notice for March 14 1885.

Letter from a Black voter in 1884 endorses Democrat Cleve

A letter dated December 26 1884 from Rauziau of North Carolina to a Shepherdstown gentleman expresses support for Democrat Grover Cleveland predicting his presidency will benefit both races. The writer, a Black teacher at St Augustine Normal School, urges improvement of governance for all people and criticizes white and colored officers for misled interests. The author hopes Republicans won’t regain power.
