Bells and memories toll in Shepherdstown churches
Observer recalls historic church bells in Shepherdstown. The first bell, moved from the Lutheran church tower after 1868 remodeling, now tolls at Elmwood Cemetery. Reformed church bells once rang together, christened with home made wine during dedications. Old customs of funeral bell tolling are described, and longtime sexton William R. Deck, “Parson's Deck,” prepares to retire as worship moves to the new church grounds.
