Telegraph rate hike and Woolworth obituary noted in Shepherdstown
In the Shepherdstown Letter to the editor, the press notes a 20 percent telegraph rate increase from April 1 and remarks on wartime price rises. Frank W. Woolworth dies, leaving a vast store empire and a fifty-one story New York building. The State Tax Commissioner audits local town books, and a $7 bill is deemed steep. Prohibition opponents push a direct vote stance while Michigan rejects legal sale of light wine and beer. Real estate transfers in Jefferson County include Jenkins to Jones near Bakerton, Robinson to Jefferson Cooperage, Tipton to Wiltshire in Millville, and school lot sales in Middleway.
