Michigan police report 485 water accidents through September 19, with 201 deaths and 214 injuries. Swimmers and waders total 84 deaths, up 18 from last year, while boat passenger fatalities rose to 35. Other drownings include falls, rescues, and divers.
Mrs. Jessie Loy of Midland spent Friday and Saturday with her mother Mrs. Harrison Lilly. Mrs. Lily accompanied her daughter to her Midland home Saturday, and they were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Darwin Loy. Mrs. Tilly returned home Saturday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Fry of Greendale called on Mrs. Harrison Lilly Sunday. Mrs. Arnold Ferman was a Sunday dinner guest of Mrs. Harrison Lilly.
Michigan hunters will face changes this fall for sharp tailed grouse and prairie chickens. Off limits areas include Drummond Island and part of Ontonagon county during Oct 1 to Nov 10 in the UP. The panhandle above the Straits reduces bag limits to two per day four in possession and eight per season to reflect declining numbers. A closed season returns for prairie chickens in the northern lower peninsula while a seven year ban on sharptail hunting ends there. An Oct 20 27 season opens at 10 am in Antrim Otsego Missaukee Crawford Roscommon Kalkaska with first week pheasant season timing.
Michigan residents are urged to seek farmer permission before hunting on private lands and to follow safe, respectful practices. Key rules include limiting party size, parking on the farmer’s land, learning boundaries, avoiding crops and livestock, keeping dogs leashed, closing gates, and reporting damage. Maintaining goodwill with farmers can keep lands open for future seasons.
