Newton in race for House Speaker post in Michigan
Rep Carroll C Newton of Detroit with Rep Andrew Cobb of Elsie are contenders for Speaker of the Michigan House. Newton, a four term member and Ways and Means critic, is described as sharp spoken and hard hitting, conservative on fiscal policy, and known for budget discipline. Next column will cover Rep Wilfred G Bassett as a potential future Speaker. Governor Swainson faces criticism for vetoing district bills and seeking federal aid with matching funds.
