Local notes mix humor, politics and old headlines
A collage of quotes and items includes Wilbur Benn bread jokes, tax loophole debates on REA financing, a critique of school funding shifts, and remarks on voter turnout. It recalls 1953 milestones like John Wilberding’s National Guard promotion, a Wanda Caszatta engagement, a new staff addition, and a proposed local ferry in Shepherd.

Isabella County to Accept Bids for Jail Razing
The board of supervisors will accept bids for razing the 80 year old Isabella County jail after March actions. They weigh disposal options since remodeling for county offices is not economical. With a 452000 jail cost, the fund lacks about 22000 to pay contractors and may use county general funds. A committee will study basement office use to ease courthouse crowding. Burke McClintic reports the state fire marshal says the juvenile detention home can be used after remodeling, and another committee will study that work.
