VFW Post and Auxiliary Restore Shepherd Roadside Park

Joe Alsh Post 8215 VFW and the Ladies Auxiliary revived Shepherd Roadside Park with help from State Highway Department County Road Commission Coe Township and Village of Shepherd. Volunteers cleaned scrubbed tables and raked grounds while others helped with mowing and rubbish removal.

Playground Opens Monday Under supervision of CMU student

Town and Country Recreation Association sets opening day for the playground program from June 19 to August 11 with activities for girls and boys. Registration starts 9:00 A.M. on opening day. Events include swimming, wheel contest, parade, street dance, contests, tournaments, crafts, sports, and supervised play areas. Some residents questioned tornado alert procedures but authorities state sirens sound only when Civil Defense signals danger.

Isabella County Youth And Farm Fair Aims For Best Yet

The 1961 Isabella County Youth And Farm Fair begins under new manager Ken Schrock with a busy calendar and ordered publicity. Ads for the fair book are being sold by Mrs. James Collins, and a home talent show replaces the traditional big show to fit the budget. President Chester Brown and the Fair Board plan other acts, with dates August 15 to 19.

Dr. C. L. Anspach Seeks Con-Con Delegate Seat

Dr. Charles L. Anspach, president emeritus of Central Michigan University, filed to run as a Republican delegate for the Clare-Isabella district in the Constitutional Convention. He stated he will serve the district’s best interests and prepare his platform.

Richard Salisbury Wins Board of Education Post

In a quiet Shepherd School Board election on Monday June 12 Richard F Salisbury won the four year post by one vote. He received 55 votes to rival Robert Watters 54 with one ballot spoiled. Salisbury will join six other board members to set Shepherd school policies.

Boating Accident Hospitalizes Youth in Mecosta County

An afternoon at Chippewa Lake in Mecosta County ended with three Shepherd area youths injured after a boat ride schoolmates Pat Pifer 17 Dennis Holton 18 and Tom Sponseller 18 were involved in a boating incident. Tom released the ski rope and was struck by the wake causing a close call as the boat circled and the teens attempted to retrieve him.

Little League Farm Clubs Organized

Little League in Shepherd forms Farm Clubs to develop younger players. Timbered teams include Lions Bears Tigers and Seals, each led by a named manager. First organizational meeting set for 2:00 PM Saturday, June 17 at the Little League diamonds to finalize squads and practice.
