H Paul Warmbrunn who joined Shepherd in 1952 as principal becomes superintendent in 1953. He coordinates 44 staff members 14 bus drivers a bus mechanic 2 secretaries 8 custodians and 4 cooks. Payroll totals 10500 semi weekly. He oversees transportation hot line purchasing and overall school program.
Superintendent notes public support as Shepherd Public Schools near unveiling of a new high school building. Nellie Stalter oversees finances in a modern office suite adjacent to the superintendent and board rooms. A 1958 vote approved the project. completion faced delays due to steel strikes, now pending dedication. Donald Gates serves as junior high principal and athletic director as 185 students attend seventh and eighth grade.
Warmbrunn opened for classes on November 21 1960 serving 820 students in grades nine through twelve. The facility has boosted instruction mental health and student pride while taxpayers’ support is praised. Ellen Combs a 1960 Shepherd High graduate began as an office girl and later assisted the principal’s office before moving to full time work after graduation.
