Republican Senatorial Convention at Appleton in 1867

The Republican Senatorial Committee reports a convention will be held in Appleton on August 29 1867 to select two delegates for the State Convention in Madison on September 4 1867. Also includes court notes on rapes and a life sentence, weather and crops, trout fishing plans, berry trade, harvest dance, and local advertisements.

Slave lash and outrages reported in Kentucky and Milwaukee

An account from a Cincinnati paper details a brutal whipping of a Colored girl near Lebanon Kentucky by Norman Wythrow and his brother after a theft accusation. The girl was bound whipped and dragged two miles with a rope around her neck. US officers arrested the Wythrows and the case notes a wave of similar attacks in Kentucky. The Milwaukee Sentinel reports heavy swindling by Edward White in pork and lard receipts totaling 20000 dollars with barrels of sand substituted. Kenosha Telegraph changes hands with old editors returning to office. Menominee Herald notes a man’s jump from a third story window in a somnambulant episode.

Indian Attack Near Fort Harker Reported

The Aug. 4 dispatches describe an ambush six miles from Fort Harker where seven laborers were killed. Cavalry pursued the Indians, who seized 20 horses at Big Creek stage station. Capt. Ames led a pursuit with 50 men. the Indians, numbering about 200, were found on Saline River. Casualties included one U.S. soldier killed and five Indians killed. Ames wounded.

River body may be British detective killed by Fenian raid

A body found in the New York river is rumored to be the British detective shot by the Fenians during investigations. Other reports note a Memphis navy yard keeper Wood shooting his wife, Cuban yellow fever spreading, and violent incidents, with political and international developments also listed.
