Council proposes a resident ballot to decide speed bumps in front of homes. A two thirds approval is required, unreturned ballots count as no. Cul de sacs excluded, no more than four bumps per fiscal year. Youth Council requests plaza project.
The Shafter City Council approved a Skate Park Forum for October 6 at 4:30 p.m. in the downtown square and allowed a two day Circus King Lion International event September 28-29 on Lerdo Highway. They also backed a zoning plan to control nuisance factors and passed a new ordinance to study local electricity options should PG&E buyouts push up costs. A Fly-By support request up to 5000 was approved to help pay airplane fuel costs. A September 11 special meeting adopted resolution 1527 opposing dairy farms within three miles of schools or district properties, reflecting a broader dairy siting policy.
The Alliance Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault sponsors the Second annual Dog Daze Run at Shafter's Minter Field. Events include a one mile walk and 5 and 10 kilometer runs starting 9 a.m. on Saturday October 6 with an early 7:45 a.m. check in. Entrants receive a custom T shirt, pancake breakfast, and a awards ceremony after races. Dogs and owners may join the one mile walk and 5K. Door prizes and a pet-specific drawing are planned. Proceeds aid 24 hour hotline, shelter and survivor services.
