Pedestrian Hit by Car in Shafter Intersection
A female pedestrian, Cynthia Martinez of Shafter, was struck by a southbound Firebird driven by Linda Gates at South Shafter Avenue and Beth Eden. Martinez suffered leg injuries but no bones were broken and was treated and released from North Kern Hospital in Wasco. Local police noted a rise in arrests of nonlocal individuals with warrants and urged residents to call police with concerns. A rain dampened streets and a transformer fire caused brief outages near 305 Central Avenue.

Planning Commission Denies Zone Change in Shafter Meeting
The Shafter Planning Commission denied Zone Change 79-4 by Lewis and Associates at the September 18 hearing. It would rezone 21 lots from R-1 to R-3 and two from R-1 to C-2 at Tentative Tract 4264 south of Minter Avenue. Five residents opposed citing lower property values, lack of play areas, small lot sizes, and traffic. owner Bobby Lewis argued the apartments suit owner-occupants with larger lots and ample play space.
