Richland approves two new district leaders
Richland School District Board selects Richard Lande as Assistant District Superintendent and Dr. Rodgers as District Psychologist and Director of Special Services. Lande comes from Penryn in Placer County with a rich background and U C Berkeley and Stanford credentials. Rodgers, with a doctorate from Oklahoma and a master from Chico, will lead Special Education planning and student testing.

Police hunt for missing pet pig and arrests in Shafter
Shafter Police search for a missing pet pig from Strafter High, while two suspects, Dewey Jessee and Russell Drafton, face assault with a deadly weapon charges after a September 5 home invasion. Officer Jim Northcutt and Earl O'Brien made the arrest. A marijuana device was found in Jessee’s auto. In separate cases, Gerald Pilcher received 30 days in jail and 36 months probation for a gun incident. Hector Ramos Ruiz was convicted of drunk driving with 24 months probation and a $390 fine. Four juveniles were arrested at a Shafter High School dance but released that night after a fight over a girl. no weapons or injuries.

Burmeister to Speak at Shafter History Dinner
The Shafter Historical Society will host a celebration dinner for charter members on November 1 at the Shafter Motel. Guest speaker Eugéne Burmeister, Kern County historian, known for his Early Days In Kern column, will present. Dinner costs 5.50 dollars, including tax and tip, starting at 6 30 p.m. All charter members are invited. The Society Board meeting is set for October 11 at 7 p.m.

Shafter Wasco Irrigation District Raises Water Rates

Cotton A Acreage Cut Planned In San Joaquin Valley
Tom Cherry, manager, told the 43d annual meeting in Visalia that a 10 percent reduction in cotton acreage is planned for next year in the San Joaquin Valley. To accommodate this, the board approved saving 22 000 fuzzy tons of seed, with 70 percent Acala SJ-2 and 30 percent Acala SJ-5.
