John Bien 67 of 240 Pacific Street died Monday evening from a gunshot in his trailer at Anderson’s Trailer Court. Officer Nixon investigated. he was taken to North Kern Hospital then Mercy Hospital in Eien, where he died. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Funeral Chapel.
City officials plan an open public hearing on a mixed business use issue as part of the Roger Fenderson matter. Council members heard arguments from both sides and discussed the plan to designate an area as a recreation site with softball facilities later this year.
Dr Henry W Voth medical director for civil defense in Shafter was guest speaker at the Junior Women's Club meeting on September 18 at the home. The group pledged to raise community awareness of Civil Defense and will distribute Civil Defense and Disaster Council cards listing available volunteers. P T A officers were welcomed at the executive board meeting on September 17. Lew Woodard announced new officers and chairs with Mrs. Lewis Carroll named secretary after Mrs. John Dean resigned. A proposed budget for the coming year was read and will be presented to the PTA Tuesday.
The Shafter Garden Club opened its fall season with a meeting at the president's home. Seven members and six guests attended the gathering.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce leads a cleanup drive with local property owners helping place trash in city containers for curbside collection. Kelly and Jack Harris oversee the schedule with public works to facilitate rubbish removal. further details will appear in The Press.
