The Richland Parent-Teachers Association schedules a barbecue and carnival on October 3 at the Intermediate School on Shafter Avenue. Tickets cost 1.50 for adults and 0.50 for children. proceeds fund clothing glasses and lunches for needy children.
Funeral services were held for Ralph Glenn Sanderson 81 of 606 State St who died September 19 after a heart attack. Rev Glenn D Puder of the First Presbyterian church officiated with interment in Shafter cemetery. A native of Hanover Michigan he had lived in Shafter 23 years leaving behind one son Glenn D Sanderson in Stockton two daughters Mrs Harry Davis Walnut Creek and Mrs George Gaede Shafter one sister Mrs Louis Fowler Alpena eight grandchildren. He was born November 3 1874 in Hanover Michigan to William and Ella Sanderson, with the late Carrie Kolbenstet ter.
The Wasco Shafter Community Concert Association mails membership cards and announces three upcoming concerts. Vocalist Mary MacMurray opens at Shafter High School on October 21, followed by the Tucson Boy s Chorus on January 22, and a final Shafter program concluding the season. The Mary MacMurray performance features a versatile voice described as evenly toned from top to bottom. The Tucson Boys Chorus, directed by Eduardo Caso, will present classics and folk songs with humor on stage.
Shafter High defeats Fowler 25 13 in a Friday night showdown as Herman Jones scores twice and Jim Jones adds a long run. Shafter’s B team then dominates Fowler with Borton Schacht and Dunigan leading the Colonels as they prep for Arvin Friday.
Shafter’s entry by the Chamber of Commerce captured second place in Bakersfield after Wasco. The colorful Oriental design showcased Shafter life with produce displays and a 300 square foot exhibit area. Perry Munger, soil conservation specialist, was transferred from Prosser to Shafter to expand county farming education and district formation. He heads from the old county fairgrounds to aid land leveling irrigation range practices and general conservation.
The Shafter Personnel Board reappoints a local barber this week to serve until September 1960. Appointed by Mayor Adolf Kirschemmann and approved by the city council, other members include Joseph Frizzell and William Lowe.
Shafter city council appointed Richard Larson, its representative on the city fees commission, to a newly formed county census committee. The county group will compile census tract information across the county in preparation for the 1960 decennial census.

Robert Fulfer of Shafter a utility man for the Southern California Gas company was seriously burned last week repairing a gas line leak in Arvin. He credited safety goggles with preventing the loss of sight in both eyes while others burned. Fulfer was among three burned and was hospitalized at San Joaquin hospital.
The Shafter city council seeks county assistance to develop a master growth plan for the area. Following planning commission approval, the proposal was sent to the county board of supervisors, who had earlier established a policy allowing county aid to cities on a proportionate share basis.
The Western Harness Racing Association opened the stable area at Hollywood Park this week as about 600 horses prepare for the 34 day meeting starting Thursday October 3. Racing Secretary Harry Hatch welcomed Midwest entrants and California stables while anticipating renowned drivers like veteran Joe O'Brien to arrive later in the week.
Plans for Shafter homecoming events for October 25 to 27 moved forward as committees finalize details. A daytime talent show will be held October 26 at Memorial Hall Park behind the Memorial hall, serving to showcase local talent without competition. Parade chairman Jim Tucker notes strong support from key organizations.
The Shafter Lions plan White Cane Day with canes sold at football game entrances Friday from 6 to 8 pm and booths Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm at strategic locations. Lions urge wear white canes to aid a youngster’s eyesight while supporting the cause.
Edna Foreman cancels grand opening of planned drive-in at Tulare and Walker avenues due to mechanical problems. She had planned to lease the eatery from the American Legion.
