Shafter is installing its first full scale carbon treatment plant at well 14 to remove 1 2 3 Trichloropropane from the water. The city reports TCP is detected but within state limits and outlines a plan to treat all wells by 2009 while pursuing a lawsuit with Brown and Bryant suppliers.
The city of Shafter issued a notice announcing pavement and concrete improvements along Lerdo Hwy between Central Valley Hwy and Shafter Avenue. Work begins September 29, lasts about two weeks, with the first week focusing on concrete. Sidewalks curbs and gutters will be replaced, wheelchair ramps installed, pedestrian access may be restricted, and parking near work zones will be prohibited. After concrete work, full width paving will follow as traffic rerouting is not possible.
Shafter Police Department plans a sobriety and driver's license checkpoint on September 26 from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. The operation will include Drug Recognition Experts and trained officers, with Reserve officers and volunteers counting and logging vehicles to remove impaired drivers.
At a recent meeting Shafter officials declared October 11 2008 as Museum Day to boost city funds and awareness. The Green Hotel Depot Museum and Minter Field Air Museum anchor three local sites sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Debbe Haley touts publicity value while bids were awarded for the new animal shelter including a 61914 foundation contract to Terry Bedford Construction and 24880 for electrical work. Three surplus 1990 model vehicles were authorized for sale or donation.
