Kirby's Shoe Store Fire Damages Shafter Biz Total Loss
Firefighters battled a Saturday blaze at Kirby's Shoe Store in Shafter causing an estimated $100,000 in damages to the interior and stock of shoes plus smoke and water damage. The adjacent Made O'Day store suffered similar smoke impact as the wall between buildings kept flames contained. Damage is expected to exceed $5,000 in repairs to the Bug building owned by Mrs. Bertille J. Jacobs, with Kirby's planning a temporary relocation after the Seformed alarm at 7:50 p.m. The fire started in a passageway between floors near an electric cord, and a volunteer crew along with county units participated in extinguishing the fire.
