District surveys show strong RLSD parent involvement
Richland Lerdo School District Superintendent Dr Dan Knapp says parent involvement is favorable after three notices to parents yielded 82 percent of the student population expressing willingness to monitor homework. About 76 percent of 2430 students had parents ready to engage, with 47 percent seeking to learn more about working with their child.

Ground breaking for Elk roofing facility in Shafter
Officials including Supervisor Roy Ashburn and Mayor Linda Gragg opened Elk Corp and Shafter’s 87 acre site at Lerdo Highway and Highway 99 for a 150000 square foot laminated Fiberglas asphalt shingles plant. The $30 million project aims to start production by 1994 and create up to 140 jobs.

Beechie police officer hero saves infant in fatal fire
Shafter officer Mary Beechie, also a mother, risked her life entering a smoke filled home to rescue 11 month old Bradlee Ricapa. Despite her bravery two children Robbie Jr and Bradlee died from smoke inhalation while the mother and four other children escaped. Fire started in a bedroom from a child playing with a lighter and the home at 149 Nickel St burned rapidly.
