First Spinach Crop To Be Grown Here In Shafter
Preparations are underway for what is believed to be the first commercial spinach crop in the Shafter area. More than 200 acres will be planted by a group of farmers including the Bender brothers, Handel, Steele, Chernabaeft, and Ed Schnidt. The crop could be ready for market by early January with a possible second harvest in March. Spinach is to be trucked to cannery centers in Los Angeles and Oxnard, promising another profitable addition to local farming.

Local Road Work Slated To Start In Shafter Corcoran Area

Martin A. O'Brien of California Division of Highways and Public Works said the neon Shafter directional sign at the 99 highway Lerdo road intersection may be relocated if its lettering color changes from red to blue green. Permanent Quarters For Field Offices
The Federal Housing Administration approved Guy E. Hall of Bakersfield for 268 286 to build 42 double bun galows 1 single bungalow and offices at Lerdo Road opposite the Air Corps Basic Flying School east of Shafter. Work will finish within 75 days with 100 plus workers on site. Permanent quarters already housed post headquarters message center public relations office ground school and school secretary at Lerdo. Street work and grading proceed while 130 training planes are brought from west of Shafter. Lerdo hosts an aviation exhibit at the Bakersfield fairgrounds and officers cadets enjoy Ping pong horseshoes volleyball and softball. Fifty men of the 72nd Air Base group attended a Bakersfield skating party with plans for a larger event next week. Open house for soldiers is scheduled with the American Legion Bakersfield YMCA and Women’s Club during Frontier Days.
