The Kern County Retired Teachers Association led by vice president Hazel Haag plans a First Christian Church Bakersfield talk by Robert Gordon on Malawi and the Peace Corps view. Week's High Temperatures Reach 94 in Shafter

The USDA Cotton Research Station reports Shafter saw highs in the high eighties to low nineties during the week ending Monday. Saturday recorded the top 94 degree reading while overnight lows stayed between 59 and 70.

Hofman and partners to buy Roe property

Marvin Roe confirms a sale of his subdivision property to Bakersfield developer Ernie Hofman and two investors Ed A Brown and Robert Doe. The final price will be set at escrow closing as buyers pay interest on a note, with Roe estimating total costs around 106 000 to 108 000 dollars. He faces losses from taxes interest and legal fees totaling about 10 000 dollars, far below his hoped 100 000 profit from the Farmers Home Administration financed project.

District to hire four teachers as enrollment climbs

Richland Board votes to authorize hiring four teachers after enrollment neared 1810 students district wide. Average class size sits at 30.2, with kindergarten 33.3 and first grade 27.3. Funds from increased enrollment would cover about 72,692 in state aid and replenish reserves.

Building Permits Rise in Shafter August Totals

Construction in Shafter jumped in August with $118,142 in permits, lifting the year-to-date total to $378,098. The month saw only two new residences valued at $34,770 and $23,161, while a $1,000 permit covered business remodeling and the rest funded residence remodeling.

District Governor honors Kelly Rotary Fellow at Shafter

Shafter Rotarians and guests hosted District Governor Billy Watson of San Luis Obispo for a steak barbecue at Ed A. Browns home. The event announced H W Pat Kelly as a Paul Harris Rotary Foundation Fellow for contributing to Rotary. The Foundation funds international study and understanding projects. Jan Dargatz studied in Finland in 1973 under a Rotary fellowship.

Recreation and Parks District meeting scheduled in Shafter

Members of advisory groups overseeing the Shafter Recreation and Parks District will meet tonight at 7 30 in Shafter City Hall. Chairman Fred Starrh convened the session to plan publicity for the proposal on the November ballot.

Witness disputes police harassment in Shafter cases

A Shafter man testified that part of Ella Walker's claim of police harassment against her son John is untrue. He described incidents involving modified mufflers and racing citations issued by officers including Wayne Davis and Ramon Herrera, with others in pursuit and at least one suspension of trial dates.
