Harris Promoted to Private First Class in Germany
Jessie P Harris 18 and his wife Martha live in Button Willow California. He is now a private first class in Germany with the 4th Armored Division. A combat construction specialist with Company A 24th Engineer Battalion at Fort Worth entered service in November 1958 and arrived in Europe last May after basic training at Fort Hood Texas. Harris attended Shafter High School.

Gas firms seek rehearing on El Paso rate case refunds
Southern California Gas Company and Southern Counties Gas Co appeal to the Federal Power Commission for a rehearing on the El Paso Natural Gas Co rate decision. The FPC order would refund about 4 million to Southland gas users while increasing El Paso's annual California Arizona Texas and New Mexico rates by about 14.5 million. Local utilities would see roughly half of the overpayment refunded. The companies argue the California cost allocation is excessive and vow to continue fighting the increases under the Natural Gas Act.

Blood Bank Drive Slated at Memorial Hall September 23
The Blood Mobile visit to Memorial Hall in Shafter on Wednesday September 23 runs 3 to 7 pm. The Minister Association aids the drive amid rising blood use. Local chairman Jack Janzen notes Kern General Hospital requires two pints per pint used and other hospitals charge a ten dollar processing fee. People planning surgery should contact Janzen at Memorial Hall and donors should not eat for three hours prior.

FFA Display Livestock in Sacramento
Seven Shafter High School FFA members showed livestock at the California State Fair in Sacramento. Accompanied by Agriculture Chairman Burley Dooley, Kenneth Mebane won the Reserve Champion Award in the show’s division. The 1 140 steer weighed in and will appear again at Kern County Fair in Bakersfield. August steer shown by Branch earned a premium.

Richland To Give Group Conferences
Richland Intermediate School invites parents to group conferences in their children’s classrooms. Last year 275 mothers and fathers attended. The sessions run during the first month to help parents meet teachers and other parents and learn about daily procedures and the study program.

Two Buddies Enlist in U S Army Under Buddy Program
Norman J. Isaac and Gary L. Nightingale, both Shafter California residents, enlisted in the U S Army on September 10 1959 under the Buddy Assignment Program. They will train together at Fort Ord California and take a home visit leave after basic training. Norman will join Military Police and Gary Electrical Equipment Maintenance, chosen by the pair before enlistment.

Adult Classes Begin at SHSat Shafter High School
