Shafter Officials Say Budget Cuts Won’t Hurt City
City Manager Wade McKinney says Shafter can absorb the California budget cuts signed by Gov. Pete Wilson with about 40 000 in foregone projects and loses of 30 000 from the general fund plus 13 000 from redevelopment. He notes contingency funds were set aside for state action. Wilson signed after a 90 day stalemate, drawing criticism from state leaders and school officials who cite 500 million in cuts requiring 2 1 2 percent district reductions. Critics call the move a double cross while officials argue funds were set aside for technical reasons.

Cotton Prices Fall as Farmers Brace for Harvest

Kern County unemployment fell to 12.8 percent in July as agriculture added jobs, with table grapes peaking as a top earner. Cotton crop prospects look favorable though planting windows and weather conditions shaped early-season outcomes.
