Shafter Farm Labor Camps, Inc. a new non profit growers corporation, gathered about twenty five growers who advanced 7500 for operation of two camps. Operation begins Sept 15 with a federal contract through year end. Rent rates for garden homes and shelters were revised with modest reductions and occupancy limits specified.
Service clubs and the Shafter Chamber of Commerce endorsed a fund raising preview show to decorate Shafter for Christmas. Ernest Panero announced a premier picture at 7 30 on Oct 6 with all proceeds to the Christmas Decoration fund. Tickets will be sold by the clubs. a capacity crowd is expected.
Kern County Department of Weights and Measures will test and seal cotton field scales at L A Camp Ginning Company on Walker Avenue tomorrow at 1 30 p m. The service is free of charge and open to growers with scales in use at the gin.
Rates at the South Shafter Camp are four dollars per shelter per week for one family and six dollars per week where a family requires two shelters. Directors of the growers group say rentals will be regulated by operating costs. The camps will run on a non profit basis, aiming only to cover operating costs.
The Pacific Gas and Electric Company steam plant on Rosedale Highway near Bakersfield advances toward completion with first unit due by April next year. The $25 million, 160 acre project will employ up to 850 workers, feature four radiant boilers generating 517 500 pounds per hour at 1475 pounds pressure, store fuel in massive tanks, and transmit power at 70 000 and 110 000 volts to serve the San Joaquin Valley.
Rotary Governor H W Pat Kelly visits the Shafter club to advise officers on administration and service activities. As District 106 head, he oversees about 6 200 clubs with 305 000 members in 78 countries, highlighting Rotary aims of fellowship, community improvement, and global goodwill. The article notes 418 new clubs formed last fiscal year across multiple regions and nations.
The Wednesday Afternoon Club met at Mrs. Vannatta's home with officers and directors present. New standing committee appointments included child education home arts music welfare publicity hospitality and junior advisors. Mrs. Burns resignation was accepted and Mrs. Bender named to replace her. The group voted to withdraw from teenage dances and planned a January fundraiser. The first fall meeting is set for October 1.
The Shafter Rifle Club plans a 7 30 p m practice session in the basement of Jack Hare s warehouse. President Jim Honey notes this is the first shoot in over three months. Members must bring own guns, targets supplied, expect finish near 10 p m.
The First Baptist Ladies Missionary circle will meet Thursday evening at 7 30 in the Social Hall. This is the opening fall meeting and the fall work will begin.
Mr and Mrs Edwin Bender host Helmuth Bender and Orin Bender brothers of Edwin Bender, visiting from Sioux City Iowa and Menno South Dakota. The note records house guests and family ties among the Benders.
Miss Avisia Kingston of Riverbank visited over the weekend at the home of her sister Mrs. Ed Brown.
Kiwanis defeated Shafter Rotary 15 to 11 on Richland diamond in a lively charity contest. Bill Carpenter and Frank Johnson hit two home runs for Kiwanis, with Lowell Todd making a notable catch and Vernon Pierce earning the only strikeout. Proceeds benefitted the Boy Scout building fund.
Sill Properties purchased Shafter distributorship of General Petroleum Corporation on September 1 and renamed it Farmers Oil Company. Kyle Austin, district manager, states offices remain at Central and Walker, Wasco and Buttonwillow areas served, personnel kept, and service level maintained. Austin, a Bakersfield native, has 16 years with General Petroleum.
Local police logged four arrests and eight citations over the weekend. Mac Nichols and Hiley Cavins faced intoxication and vagrancy charges with sentences of thirty days for Nichols and a $50 fine plus sixty days suspended for two years for Cavins. Charley Rance and Walter Leslie Emery were also jailed on intoxication charges with Rance fined $30 and Emery given a $100 fine and ninety days suspended for two years.
Kern County Union High School District Superintendent T L McCuen spoke to about 340 teachers and administrators at the annual fall faculty meeting in East Bakersfield High School, calling for a unified effort to improve American life through strengthened instruction and clear educational aims. He outlined four education purposes and stressed matching lessons to student goals and development.
