A reader argues sex education should be taught in schools with a strong visual program rather than parent only classes. Others urge Shafter to back a housing program to relieve a construction slowdown and attract small industries. Joe Frizzell and daughter Virginia visited Bass Lake and returned to Shafter last Friday.
The Kiwanis and Rotary service clubs meet at Richland on Friday for the Shafter championship deciding game. Vernon Pierce faces Kiwanis duo Blake and Hanley Witcher as managers promise tight lineups. Proceeds benefit the Shafter Boy Scout Building Fund.
Enrollment in Shafter schools rose to record highs, with Richland School District up 205 students and Shafter High School adding 57. Superintendent O. T. Olson noted further increases anticipated at the peak of the season.
Richland Schools opened with 1350 students and 75 more registered on Wednesday, reaching 1425 for an all time high. Superintendent Olson said the 2000 target for elementary schools was anticipated, with the new ultra modern intermediate buildings in use and winter term underway smoothly.
The Shafter High School opened with 459 students, setting a new registration record up from 402 last year. The increase comes with summer improvements including an enlarged faculty, new instruction courses, expanded library facilities, and equipment for Farm Mechanics to boost efficiency and pupil development.
A Shafter Farm Center Raisin Growers Committee meeting failed to secure price adjustments. Advisor John DeVincenzo said the group seeks a government parity price around 160 dollars per ton. The decision rests with Secretary of Agriculture Clinton P. Anderson, who was in Hawaii and is expected back soon. DeVincenzo notes raisins face surplus while wheat prices remain high, complicating gains for raisin farmers.
Richland School District and community leaders press for a new Shafter swimming pool funded by June voters. Architects Ernest Kump and Associates have drawn preliminary plans while a federal building permit is awaited from Washington.
Shafter residents are invited to a Monday night event at the Shafter Theatre to fund a downtown Christmas display. Ernest Panero donates the theatre and a premiere film. admission is 1.50 dollars. proceeds go to the community decoration fund aided by local service groups and the Chamber of Commerce.

Emma Boehnke of Milwaukee Wisconsin leaves after a several week visit with her father Mr Fred Boehnke.
The Shafter 20 30 club drew wide publicity at the national convention in San Antonio. Members traveled by air with two couples driving, toured Phoenix El Paso and Juarez, and used a spud room in the Gunter Hotel serving 2500 guests. A gavel race, charity donations, radio interviews, and a ranch visit marked the trip, with a mileage trophy going to Madera Club. The next International Convention will be on Santa Catalina Island before Labor Day.
The Shafter Bank of America branch paid out 34 141.83 for veterans terminal leave bonds over Tuesday and Wednesday. Bank manager Joe Cosgrove reported 105 bonds cashed Tuesday totaling 22 105 and 53 bonds Wednesday adding 12 036.33 to reach the total.
Jack Hill, principal of Shafter High School, was unanimously elected president of the Shafter Kiwanis Club for the coming year at the regular weekly meeting held at Cawelo Motel. Hanley Witcher named vice president with Bert Ware as secretary. a new board includes Jim Hahn Bill Carpenter Ted Kinman Earl Weil Joe Frizzell Dave Jones and Lee Thomas. The officers will assume duties January 1 1948.
The National Automobile Club reports the Truckee River in Placer County still yields solid fishing while other county streams run low.
Final transactions completed this week transferring Kemp Furniture Co to J. E. Wheeler and his son Jarvis in Porterville. They own Corcoran and Porterville stores and plan a major revamp with top lines of new furniture plus used pieces. The Shafter store will reopen after a two week stocking period.
The Clifford Richards family plans to move back to North Shafter this week after tenants depart. He is the son of Mrs. Sarah Richards and will resume residence at their local home.
Mr and Mrs Mervin Schirmer return to Shafter after several weeks vacation in Santa Monica detailing their travel and respite from local duties.
A man in dark glasses and a wide hat is detained by Shafter police as a suspected Wasco or Delano Chamber of Commerce snoop at the A-1 priority Shafter Chamber exhibit. He is Joe Cosgrove, Bank of America manager and chamber director, who says he was investigating espionage by Wasco and Delano. Dr. John Harold Revell says the exhibit builders have moved underground to finish the project.
City Judge Frank Shaw announced plans to recondition three main streets Lerdo Highway Walker Street and Shafter Avenue in Shafter to smooth rough spots widen Shafter Avenue by 20 feet starting at Five Points. The Allis Chalmers street maintainer lacks a ripper delaying work. The city purchased two dump trucks and the street maintainer at 14667 with 1900 more for attachments including the ripper. A petition seeks gutters and sidewalks. Pedestrian zones are being repainted for school safety.
