Kern County retail trade rose 13.2 percent year over year to a record 437.8 million in the first quarter, driven by a record 104.7 million in automotive sales and by strong gains across general merchandise, eating and drinking, and building materials. Bakersfield led with 206.6 million in taxable sales, followed by Ridgecrest and Delano.
The City of Shafter will be represented in the Wasco Rose Festival Parade on Saturday September 9 at 10 a.m. with the Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture float. Riders include Junior Miss Corinne Huston Karla Nash Jennie Cole Sherrill Nixon Melody Colvard Tonya McWhorter Judy Gonzalez and Carrie Beach. The theme is Our Dec ade of Roses and Shafter residents are invited to join the weekend events.
Arvin Chamber of Commerce leads a group including Delano District, Shafter, and Wasco chambers in a special feature exhibit at the Kern County Fair. Nine days remain before the September 2 deadline as communities compete for premiums from 300 to 200 dollars and a sweepstakes award of 750 dollars. Peter Gilli Jr. chairs community exhibits and Taft won the Gilli Trophy in 1977.
Festival of Roses announces rose show entries for Saturday morning September 9 between 7 and 10 at Wasco Veterans Hall at Poplar and 11th. Specimen blooms must be grown by the exhibitor while arrangements are open to youths through 8th grade and older. Rose show hours run 12:30 to 5:30 on Saturday and 10 to 4 on Sunday with preview times Friday 4:30 to 5 for those needing roses.
Eva Verna Unruh 72 died August 31 in a Bakersfield hospital. Services were held at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Shafter with Elders Paul Johnson and Owen P. Jones officiating. Interment followed at Shafter Memorial Park. Survived by husband Ernest of Shafter, two sons Marshal and Ernie Dean, two daughters Madge Allen and Melba Lawrimore, two foster daughters Betty Byrd Ringer and Geneva Owens, one Jansen, 13 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
