Shafter Council debates trip cost and park land plan
The Shafter City Council approved a $45 trip cost for City Administrator Bill Sheldon to Calestoga to investigate officers Grover and Edwards, with hearings in September. The body also OK’d a $4,200 alley project, a $239 conference expense, and a plan to abolish the Recreation Department in favor of a district board, while advancing sewer grant changes and parcel improvements. Local residents commented on value, and funding details showed state and county participation in grants.

Controversy over vests in Shafter Police budget
Shafter police officers accuse Police Chief Bob Nixon of misrepresenting a 1977 budget vote on bullet proof vests. Officers recall a June 1977 meeting where a vote opposed wearing vests, yet Nixon allegedly informed City Council that a majority supported them. Council member Loyd Link and others questioned whether the decision rested with the Chief, not the Council.
