In this newspaper series on vital issues, editors examine Kern County underground water levels, noting ongoing pump installation activity and well level declines as the region explores check dam potential and cloud seeding in the Sierras.
Indian village setting and council fire mark the event as 46 Scouts from Shafter Maple Rio Bravo Lerdo and Buttonwillow receive Tenderfoot Second class and First class awards. Chief William Irvin presented promotions amid full uniform scene.
The Richland orchestra has been invited to perform at a teachers meet at the Harvey auditorium. An elementary band was not selected for the honor, as the Richland group will present a program of serious music.
Large crowds participated in homecoming festivities with a 53 entries parade and a 1000 ticket community barbecue. The event raised 1510 from ticket sales and returned 900 donated by the Chamber of Commerce. About 200 people joined the community entertainment program and many stayed for extended activities the next day as 15 area churches hosted pot lucks picnics and dinners.
On Tuesday November 12 an advanced First Aid course will begin in the Shafter High School cafeteria with Principal Arthur H. Johnson announcing. Gaylen Wood will teach the course which meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 00 p m Final class occurs Tuesday November 26.
John W. Tobeck, a German cotton broker from Bremen, is visiting the Shafter area to study cotton from field to market. He tours Kern County gins and notes the high density presses reducing fiber handling while seeking instruction on accurate classing and grading of cotton.
A Roost Shafter breakfast is set for Friday November 8 at Veterans Memorial Hall. Sponsored by Smiley Burnett and the Shafter Chamber of Commerce with Shafter Press support, merchants invite the community to attend. Reservations advised by calling Burnett’s office or the Shafter Press.
Shafter Kiwanis selects Bill Irvin a local farmer as president after unanimous vote to succeed Robert T. Bann whose term ends January. Dr Ryland M Jacobus becomes first vice president Arthur Johnson second vice president Arras Wilson re elected treasurer. secretary position to be filled by board meeting next week. Board members include Kenneth Anderson Gary Garlatz Mel ullough Joe Sales and Guenther.
The Lions Club announces the start of its calendar year with a prepared calendar noting anniversaries and committee events. Reg Hammond leads efforts to distribute the calendar to members and affiliated groups.
Official enrollment day shows Shafter high with 873 students up from 799 last year while Richland School District records 1782 pupils, surpassing 1956 figures though not the 1953 peak. Superintendent Bruce Crawford cites migrant worker patterns and greater stability in the student population over recent years.
Eleven Shafter High School seniors were named finalists for National Merit Scholarships. The program offers about 500 four year scholarships covering tuition and living expenses based on financial need. Merit Scholars may choose any accredited college.
Principal Arthur Johnson announced the annual civic football banquet will be held December 3 in the Shafter High School auditorium. A committee to arrange the affair is being formed by representatives of the city's civic organizations.
Hundreds of youngsters are expected for the 15th annual Halloween parade organized by the Shafter Kiwanis club. The March of the Goblins starts at Manuel Park at 7 PM with prizes, route through Mannel and Tulares avenues, and Shafter High School stadium for judging. The Shafter Fire Dept will distribute noisemakers. downtown window paintings by local elementary students will be judged later today.
Residents of Shafter may buy tickets from H W Pat Kelly in Shafter for the tenth annual Shrine Potato Bowl at Bakersfield Memorial Stadium on December 7. Early reservations are heavy with a sellout possible by late November. Proceeds go to the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. The Shafter High School band.
Three persons were arrested this week for allegedly driving a car while intoxicated. Leroy Martin Luther, 32, of Wasco, Hazel Mulliniks, 36, of Shafter, and Rufus D. Milam, 31, of Shafter, were taken into custody.
The winless Shafter Generals travel to South High on Saturday November 2 in a South Sequoia league matchup. South High fields a young team with little experience but strong ambition. The Generals seek their first league win after two losses while South High aims to rebound from a one and one record.
Reba Sill, a Shafter High School student and DAR Citation recipient, is named Good Citizen for the American Revolution award. Amelia Cornell, dean of girls, announced the selection after faculty submitted candidates. Reba leads the Girls Athletic Association and Future Teachers and Officials Club, with judging based on dependability, loyalty, leadership, patriotism, and service.
