Cotton Gins Push Halfway Mark In 1952 Season
Gins in the Shafter area say they are one third to one half finished with the 1952 ginning season. Tom Hayhurst of J H Fuller and Son Ginning Co says plants will run 24 hours to clear a backlog of cotton trailers. Rapid picking via mechanical harvest has accelerated ginning pace and caused a pile up of trailers. Prices are about four cents below 1951, and cotton grade is poorer due to prior poor growing conditions, with Wheeler Ridge area growers noting especially acute conditions after the quake.
