Voters in Shafco areas vote Tuesday at Shafter High School on Kern County high school bond proposals totaling 8 970 000. Propositions 1 and 2 fund a new school and Field Act repairs, with 3 and 4 proposing tax rate increases and temporary structures if needed. A Citizens Committee pushes yes on 1 and 2 and no on 3 and 4.
The Kern County Union High School District explains that ballot wording for Propositions 3 and 4 is mandatory under state law and follows the Education Code. Propositions 2 would finance repairs at McFarland Shafter and Bakersfield High School areas to meet safety standards, with options for a 10-year bond or a 2-year tax levy under Field Act provisions.
Mrs Bernice Berkebile, Richland Schools vocal music teacher, is selected to chair the Kern County Honor Chorus Committee for 1967 68. She will lead music selection, guest conductor, practice conductors and scheduling for about 35 schools. The choir of 120 girls and 90 boys performs April 20 1968 in Harvey Auditorium, teaming with the Kern County Honor Orchestra. Richland plans to choose six girls to represent the district.
Earl Brown of the Santa Fe railroad reports the start of lettuce harvest in Shafter with first shipments set for Tuesday. New quick freezers arrive near Central Valley highway by the depot to process the crop. F. W. Handel Farms is among local growers, with about 290 acres in Shafter and 150 more acres in Delano to be processed here.
Kern County Taxpayers Association releases findings on Joint Union High School District bonds. To seat 2468 new students by 1974 75, $3,787,000 required for a Bakersfield high school and new classrooms at Burroughs Kern Valley and McFarland. An extra $1,232,000 to reduce class sizes to about 25.4 students per class, adding classrooms at all schools except Bakersfield East Bakersfield and Shafter High Schools.
The Shafter Utility District Board authorized Attorney A G Mortimore to pursue an easement across Richland School District property to install water mains around Richland School. The plan estimates 13500 for mains and 9000 to 10000 for digging with several 8 and 10 inch mains to improve fire flow and hydrant coverage under engineer A A Dorman guidance.
Six candidates Gary Kruger Carl Kelley Roy Kerber Joe Kirk Bonner Boel and Mildred Fike were nominated at the Chamber of Commerce meeting to fill four director positions. The group also reviewed the Green River ordinance regulating itinerant salesmen with daylight permits and night appointments. Youth groups require clearance. The Chamber backs counting Kern County as a single entity in a legislative district and discusses reappointment that would divide the county into three parts including the eastern Mojave desert in Los Angeles areas.
Robert Somers told the Public Utility District board the insurer would reject any claim for damages when the district cut telephone lines while fixing a water main break on Lerdo Highway. The district and insurer blame an incorrect phone map for the damages, while the board raised bodily injury limits to 500000 and 1000000 with 500000 property cap and added excavation coverage. The board also approved a Shafter Concrete contract to install 1000 feet of 16 inch pipe at the disposal plant for 1811.26 and addressed a rental billing issue on a water service connection housing two tenants.

State and county ASCS leaders Owen Rice Malcolm Young Glen Yeager and Guy Manuel will discuss association activities contracts scale-down research and the Sugar Act along with beet sampling and testing reports.
The County Welfare Directors Association will hold its annual meeting on October 31 and November 12, 1967, with headquarters at the Hacienda Motel in Bakersfield. A public hearing on welfare matters will be held November 3 by State Welfare Director John C. Montgomery. Registration for the meeting is on October 31 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
Don Christensen informs the City Council the county lease on Richland Park is cancelled and offers to sell the park area to the City for 18000 dollars. A West Ash residents group appeals a Planning Commission decision to allow a mobile home facility on a park section. The Christensens seek to use the entire park area for the project. The Council delays action until the Monday zoning hearing at Council chambers and may decide that night or seek further hearings.

The City Council rejected a $10,000 claim filed by Robert and Theodora Richard on behalf of their minor child alleging arrest and mistreatment by Shafter police. It granted a carnival license to Shafter American Legion Post No. 213 for a four day event and delayed bylaw fees until proper application and a $250 daily license fee were paid. The council also discussed police car specs, fencing for Rodriguez and Hudson Parks, and awarded Project 43 work on Westero Highway to Griffith Company at $27,507.25.
