The article laments Veterans Day observance conflicts after California AB 13 and PL 90363, noting federal offices close Monday while schools and businesses vary. Veterans Day will be observed on October 28 by federal offices post office and USDA Cotton Research Station while Banks schools and county offices in many areas follow November 11. The American Legion will hold its annual membership dinner with ex service members in attendance.
The Shafter Press from May 2, 1935 initial issue to 1973 will be available on microfilm at the Kern County Library Shafter Ranch. Joseph deRamus says thirty one reels plus a viewer can be used by residents. Arrangements by phone or at 236 James Street.
Shafter eighth grade teacher M. Ray Wiley of Richland School District earns Kern County Teacher of the Year for a second consecutive year. He has led science and history classes at Richland Junior High and guided field trips before outdoor education programs.
Richland trustees endorsed a revenue limit increase and bond measure for Shafter High School, while noting unification implications and directing support to the Kern district. They also approved Prop 1 state bond money for recreational facilities, and reported the district remains financially stable with reserves above five percent. Enrollment fell by 71 students and cafeteria costs, including a new floor, caused a net loss of 3800 dollars.
Readings from Wasco Fire Station list daily highs from 78 to 92 and lows from 46 to 51 for mid October. An editor notes USDA data unavailable due to a thermometer failure and Wasco data will be used until repairs are completed.
A special Shafter Planning Commission meeting was ordered to review the draft Environmental Impact Report for the Roe EI project bordered by Elm State and Pine Streets. The session is Tuesday October 29 at 7 30 p.m. The plan by Marvin Roe has drawn protest as it targets low and middle income families and related disputes with the city will be heard in Kern County Superior Court November 5. The panel recommended filling vacancy Burley Dooley with Chuck Sanders, to be sent to the City Council.
Two drivers sustained injuries after a Tuesday crash on Central Valley Highway. Glen Taylor Conley of Dallas Texas attempted to pass, moving into the southbound lane and colliding with Hector Fantilan Gonzalez of Indio California in a 1969 Ford Mustang. Conley was cited for passing without sufficient clearance and taken to Delano Hospital with back and chest pains. Gonzalez reported head and knee pains but planned private medical care. CHP Officer Walt Pascoe investigated.
